If you were going to make a time capsule of '80s Metal, you would definitely need to include Shok Paris' classic 1987 album "Steel and Starlight." This killer album combines power, energy and melody to forge one of the greatest Metal albums of all time. S&S features 11 ball-busting tracks that capture a band at its peak. No throw-away tracks and not one filler note are found on the entire album! This was Shok Paris' second proper album, its first on a major label (the now-defunct I.R.S.) The band fought its way up from the Cleveland Metal scene to get some recognition and did so with this album.
S&S features the great vocals of Vic Hix, a singer who puts a certain passion and 'madness' into his singing. The twin-guitar work by Ken Erb and Eric Marderwald is also extraordinary, as well as the bass playing and drumming by Kel Berkshire and Jan Roll. The production on the album is perfect; not too slick and not too gritty. The best thing about S&S is that you can tell Shok Paris weren't reaching for a brass ring, trying to be something that they were not. They were just doing what they do best-kick ass-and this album turned out to be a classic. Cool cover art too. |
