Steel Prophet are a great American Power Metal band that simply gets better with each album. Proving their work ethic, BOOK OF THE DEAD is their fourth studio album in three years for Nuclear Blast. They are fronted by one of the most unique vocalists, Rick Mythiasin, who puts much-needed passion into the genre. He sings in what I describe as a "pleading" style much in the vein of Jag Panzer's Tyrant. The band are led by guitarist Steve Kachinsky Blakmoor, one of the best guitarists around. He comes up with some of the most unique riffs. The album introduces new drummer Karl Rosqvist into the fold. He melds well with the style of the band and comes up with some great double-bass work. Some of the highlights include "When Six Was Nine", "Tragic Flaws" and "Burning Into Blackness." Steel Prophet are one of those bands who are like Iced Earth, Jag Panzer etc...they are due a big break, especially here in the US. I would love to see them get huge in America, but they are obviously happy (and rightly so) with being on a German label and being bigger in Europe. I can't say that an album title like BOOK OF THE DEAD is going to make them bigger, but who cares...it's a cool name and a great album. This is the kind of quality music people in this country should be listening to: solid, powerful, thought-provoking melodic METAL.
