FINALLY..."The Rock & Roll Odyssey of Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy"" is here. That's right, Mercury Records does it again...I'd like to give them a big thumbs up for this awesome collection. (And a different finger for delaying this box set for years. Heh-heh) But in the end, they did the right thing and did a good job, releasing this box set at almost the same time as the KISS box set. I have been a huge Thin Lizzy fan for years after discovering them myself, and I always wondered why they didn't have a box set. Now they do, in this sweet 4-CD set. Thin Lizzy may not be considered "Metal", but they are hard rock and have influenced countless Metal bands, everybody from Iron Maiden and Helloween to Riot and Anthrax! They are legendary, and they are EASILY one of the top 10 hard rock bands of all time.

First off, the cover and packaging...they are top notch. Good choice of the cover photo and the touchup looks cool. I think this photo of Phil is from the sessions he did with Gary Moore. Technically, there is no "box," it opens like a hardcover book, with two CDs on the inside left cover and two on the right inside cover. Inside, you've got 48-pages of notes including a history of the band, discography and countless photos.

The music: This is a great choice of songs for this collection. There are only a few songs different from my self-made collection. You get a massive 73 songs! The discs flow in chronological order from the beginning of their career in 1970 to the final recordings of Phil Lynott in 1985. (Phil died in 1986.) There are a few rarities included, like the great song "Just The Two Of Us," apparently recorded during the Black Rose sessions, and "Don't Play Around." Also, there are a few songs from both of Phil's solo albums. Good choices of those tunes.

Complaints: Very few. There are a few notable songs they forgot to include, like "Dedication," Sweetheart," Bad Habits," and the hidden gem on the Black Rose album, "With Love." I own the entire Thin Lizzy discography, so of course I'm going to find a song or two I think should have been included.

Bottom Line-- Buy this box set.
