rear fog light installation / european spec tail lights
part one part two part three part four
by eric stevenson

After reading the following rear fog light installation websites, I was still a little confused.

http://www.bme.med.ualberta.ca/~nicola/rear_fogs.html
http://www.geocities.com/projektzwo/foglight/
http://vwonline.8k.com/VWTECH/REARFOGS/rearfogs_t.htm
http://cabrios.20m.com/tuning/lighting_rearfog.htm

A very helpful diagram is located here.

So, I'm going to try and make this as easy as possible, using as few words as I can. It's broken down into four parts (the switch, running the wire, the taillights, and the end result).

You'll need...

-euro switch, if you don't have one, order one from Potterman.

-one VW P/N 000-979-133-A. includes two connectors, $3 from dealer
-16ga wire (20 feet should do it)

-thin paper clip
-phillips head screw driver
-flat head screw driver
-soldering iron
-heat shrink tubing
-zip ties

This was performed on my '98 GTI. If your car doesn't have front fog lights, you'll have to add a relay or two. That is detailed on one of the other websites listed above. This is just an informative guide to installing a rear fog light. Hopefully it'll work for you, if it doesn't, I'm sorry. If you screw something up, I am not liable. If you want to use any of the information or images here, email me. Proceed at your own risk...

Remove the ABS panel using your flat head. If you can't do this, don't go any further. Seriously.

Now you can remove the euro switch. There is a plastic catch that needs to be pushed in for removal.

Basically, you're running a wire from slot 12 on the headlight switch harness to the driver's side taillight.

Use one of your VW P/N 000-979-133-A connectors and solder it to your 16ga wire. It's a good idea to shrink wrap where you solder, or at least use electrical tape to cover it. We're going to run that wire all the way back to the taillight.
