We talked about planning a bus trip to Wright Patterson at the last meeting. They have one major event – It’s the World War II fly-in over the labor day holiday. Labor day is early this year, September 3. They usually have a good turnout, a lot of replica stuff, Fokkers, Eindeckers, Newport larger scale, antique cars, a lot of activity.
It’s about a six hour drive, tentatively we could leave on a Friday evening, Saturday do the touring and return on Sunday. Rick Ray volunteered to check on bus cost/availability. We may want to include the IPA and UL guys to fill the bus. We will probably each need to pay our own way. If the group is not too large the local area EAA members there may provide private lodging.
Another opportunity is a Wings and Wheels fly in the third weekend of June.
Brian Kissinger, an active member of our chapter, is preparing to make his flight for cancer. The L4 Piper Cub aircraft restoration project is well underway but there is a lot to do yet and if anyone could lend a hand it would be much appreciated. He’s out at Sparta in the main hangar on weekend’s. It is a heated hangar and you can show up unannounced – they’ll be glad to have your help. Brian can be reached at 618-980-1130. The engine is back and is gorgeous, fabric is done, have to still put glass on, a lot of little things that take a long time. The first of April is the go date. Check out www.brainsflight.com.
We are looking for new ideas for programs and presentations. Members are interested in anything to do with airplanes. We could look into sponsoring the B17 from the EAA and perhaps we could do it in conjunction with the Midwest fly-in. This requires a lot of work and support.
We could also arrange poker runs, go visit local landing spots for a burger or brat. Dexter,MO or Sikeston are good targets.
Dennis D’Angelo just returned from Germany. He reports that in Germany 100LL is close to $10/gal. You must pay for take offs and landings, this is somehow tied to sound reduction. It cost approximately $1.25 each time you take off and land. It is extremely difficult to fly. Ultralights, called microlights require a medical. Things, at least now, are much easier in the good ole USA. Be sure to support you local EAA and AOPA clubs to help fight the government from taking away our flying freedoms.

Meeting Schedule March 6 at Hangar One
April 3 at Hangar One

The Leading Edge (Our President's Message)

It’s with great sadness I tell you about the passing of Warren Heck. Warren left us for bluer skies and was laid to rest on 17 February 2007. Warren served as our librarian for the past few years and will best be remembered for his hard work and commitment to making the chapter one of the best. I greatly appreciate the support our members gave to Warren and his family by attending his funeral. I was severely grounded with a bad case of the flu, so a BIG thanks goes out to all the members who supported the Heck family in their time of need. We were all blessed to have known Warren and know that he is our wingman as we continue to pursue his passion for flight.

This past month was another cold one, so not much in the way of flying; however, there appears to be a great deal of work being done on the various projects our chapter members are working on. Brian Kissinger continues to make progress on the restoration of his L-4 Cub which he will use to raise money for cancer research. To date the C-85 has returned from engine builder Don’s Dream Machines and is a beautiful work of art and Don informs us it should put out more HP than a standard C-85. Our own Todd Drenkhahn has been working on the L-4 with Brian and has the controls rigged and the fuel system well on the way to feeding the C-85 when it’s final mounted on the Cub. Past President and First Lady of Chapter 64, Mike and Maggie Brenner, visited Brian and helped with paint preparation by removing old paint from the metal components. Maggie was a real trooper, helping only a day after suffering with the flu…thanks for all your continued commitment. Painting the restored parts with Olive Dr--a great color for the airplane and even a better color for a newbie painter--is well underway and, at this rate, Brian may avoid a “Monster Garage” last minute finish to make his mid-April 2007 departure date. If you have some free time and can lend a hand please contact Brian at 618-632-3697.

Our trip to the National Museum of the Air Force in Dayton Ohio is coming together. The cost of a 50-person bus is approximately $2,000 for the two day trip so this comes out to $40/person if we fill the bus to max capacity. By leaving late Friday night we would arrive in Dayton early morning Saturday thus avoiding one night of lodging. Expected cost for lodging is approximately $60 for a double, so if we double up the cost would be about $70/person for transportation and a hotel room. We have to commit to the bus company 1 April or the price goes up. We need to discuss other options before we make any commitment so we find the best fit for those who will participate. Expect the trip will be a discussion topic at the next meeting.

Better weather is on the way, so get your airplanes ready for spring and the beginning of the flying season. See you at the next meeting and don’t forget to…

…keep ‘em flying.
