MARCH 2008 “Greetings from Chapter 64”- Secretary’s Report: Motion made and seconded
to forego reading of the secretary’s report due to mailing
of the newsletter – motion passed unanimously. Wally Hubert made motion to purchase a good quality HVLP spray gun, estimated at around $500. A good paint gun goes a long way to producing a great paint job. Discussion ensued and it was decided to bring a jobber in to provide more information on the ins and outs of the paint gun, differences between turbine types, cleaning practices, etc. Brian Kissinger won Chapter 64 Person of the Year Award and Todd Drenkhann the Chapter’s Wingman of the Year Award. These awards were presented at the Holiday party. Both expressed gratitude to the club for the awards. New Business: Discussion on who would be interested in flying to Oshkosh. Bill Buchholz said he is going and anyone interested should contact him at 314-581-8102. A discussion was had about the number of hard copies of the newsletter that get sent out. A motion was made to keep hard copies to a minimum and that anyone that wants to receive a hard copy should pay an additional $5 per year to cover the cost of print and postage. This motion was voted on and passed. The Mid-West Regional Fly-In at Downtown Saint Louis Airport is scheduled for May 24th and the chapter will be supporting that. The Second Annual Sparta Fly-In is being planned for early June 08. All proceeds will be donated to support brain tumor research. We have one new member at the meeting – his name is Bill Haddock – he flies gliders Condolences were sent to the family of Al Braun – members recalled Al being a great guy, a accomplished mechanic and welder. He flew Spitfires and owned a Pits S2A. He was a very talented and friendly guy. Albert H. Braun, 86, formerly of Belleville, Ill., born May 10, 1921, in Hecker, Ill., died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2008, at his residence in St. Peters, Mo. Mr. Braun was the retired owner of Braun's Auto Body in Swansea, Ill. He was a member of the EAA Aviation Club, Chapter 64. Albert was a World War II U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, serving in the 8th Air Force. Meeting Schedule Bill Aanstad received an exemption just in time and is working on getting the Kolb inspected as an ELSA and flying in the spring. Jim Stoops got his annual done on his plane today. Wally has the Luscombe fuselage painted and put the gas tank and headliner in. It should be finished in middle of April. Diane reported that rocket test number 7 was a success. Plan is to launch rocket to 5000 feet, probably in April. The engine is working out beautifully.
John Larabee was our guest speaker. He provided
an interesting presentation and overview of how traffic is monitored
from the air and all the communications that take place simultaneously
to provide the traffic report and FLY THE AIRPLANE at the same
time. Sounds like it gets pretty busy in the cockpit at times!!
John's been a pilot since 1982 and flies the St. Louis skies
twice daily reporting traffic conditions for KMOX radio 1120. THE MARCH LEADING EDGE (Message from the President) This month’s Leading Edge will be a short one (I can hear the cheers already) focused on the upcoming flying season and Chapter 64 support for a few critical activities. We have a few events this spring the Chapter has vowed to support; first, the Mid-West Regional Fly-In at Downtown Saint Louis Airport, scheduled for 24 May 08; next the Second Annual Sparta Fly-In, of which the proceeds will support brain tumor research, scheduled for early Jun 08 and, finally, the Scott AFB Chapter of the Tuskegee Airman Young Eagle Day, tentatively scheduled for July 08 (this event was scheduled for 9 Feb 08). We will discuss the events at the 4 March 2008 meeting…specifically, support for the Mid-West Regional and Sparta fly-Ins. We will be looking for membership support to make the events a success. In addition to the above activities, I would like to discuss
the chapter attending many of the local flying events. Last
year we made a good show attending local and regional Finally, we need to address the postponed trip to the National Museum of the Air Force. We now have a pretty good idea of the cost and length of time to make the trip. I would like to pick a date and obtain commitment from the members so we can solidify the transportation early. This trip is worth the effort, so let’s work to make it a success in 08. As promised that’s all folks. See you at the meeting on 4 Mar 08. …keep ‘em flying. dd |
