“Greetings from Chapter 64”-
The April minutes are as follows:
April 3 , Hangar One – Dennis called meeting to order@ 7PM. He thanked Mike and Maggie for providing the food for the evening. Brian gave a review of L4 rebuild progress. Jim Stoops had inspected the plane and felt its not going to be ready in time so Brian has pushed back the launch date to June 1. Brian still needs the engine installed and all hook-ups done. It took much work to get the tail fixed and the trim working but that’s done now. Plan is to take off from St. Louis Downtown airport, first stop is in Ohio.
Secretary’s Report: A motion was made to forego reading of the secretary’s report due to mailing of newsletter – motion passed unanimously.
Treasurer’s Report: Larry still has all the money from dues for 2007 to record. Currrent balance is $32,748.
Correspondence: Secretary has received some EAA letters encouraging we write to our congressman to stop the plans to impose user fees.
Old Business: Last month we talked about going to Mid-coast
for our next meeting and that plan is firmed up. The May meeting is to be
at Mid Coast and Bob passed out directions. The Outback blimp is going to
be here on the date of our meeting. We will have a blimp experience of some
type.
One member reported he contacted his Congressmen and Senator and neither
of them heard of the user fee issue!!
New Business: On the 28th of June an International Alternatives
Fuel Conference is being held in Saint Louis. The Vanguard squadron will
be giving an air show and static displays will also be on display at St.
Louis Downtown Airport. EAA64 will also fly Young Eagles. This is being
done in conjunction with the International Alternatives Fuel Conference.
This is a private air show but the EAA members are allowed.
Our $150 membership to the museum expires on April 1. Do we want to renew?
Motion was made and seconded to renew membership.
Dual meeting opportunity - Clubs in Dayton are interested in meeting us
part way for a fly-in meeting. They have slower planes so we may need to
go over 50% of the way. No set date – may be fall by the time it comes
together. Also our chapter president is trying to arrange a meeting with
other chapters to share ideas and camaraderie.
The Middletown Chapter of EAA is putting on Wings and Wheels. They present
several types of planes, Aeronicas, Steermans, etc. along with a car show.
Mike reports that Jim was in the process of ordering the instrument hole
cutting jig. Brian offered the use of a rotozip tool for cutting glass,
plastics, and Plexiglas.
Alert - OshKosh is starting a day earlier this year so be aware of the Notams.
Meeting Schedule – May meeting at is at Mid-Coast.

Young Eagles- Will fly at the June 28th event – need pilots. Still looking for pilots and crews for May 5 & 6 event. We visited the Greenville Elementary school on NASA night and distributed Young Eagle information.
Projects-Mike has engine installed. Walt helped with Horizontal stabilizer. Canopy is what’s left, about halfway done, some bending and drilling now needs to be done.
Burt Hampton - 701 coming along nicely. Don and Burt bought a Newport going, warplane. Spent last weekend with KC Dawn Patrol guys taking pictures and getting advice. Should be done in mid to late summer. Burt has his quicksilver for sale.
Walt said he will a have his Champ up in the middle of may.
Member installed his autopilot in his RV7. Body shop has Canopy done. Needs to decide what engine to use.
Bill Rohland has a Fergie he has been reconstructing. It has a Geo Metro engine and they are reconfig with new gear and moving the radiator above the engine. Hopes to reduce drag with fairing they are building. He hopes to be flying by first of June.
Ken Gottschall is building P51. He has had open heart surgery. He is looking for assistance working on his plane as he is unable to crawl thru the openings to work on linkages and inner structures. The plane is now up on its gear. He is also has the plane for sale.
Walt put a Ray Allen trim system in and held his breath as he made the cuts and drilled the wholes. The trim works great!!

Guests: Mollie Hamilton, O’Fallon High School, junior,
16, had private pilot lessons, here with Grandpa Bob Hamilton.
Rob Cosan, picked up by Air Force to fly KC135s, from military family so
he’s been flying for 35 years. . Experimental and light airplanes
have always been a passion.
THE LEADING EDGE (Message from the President)
NEXT MEETING: Don’t forget our next meeting will be held Tuesday, May 1, at the Midcoast Aviation Training Center in Hangar 18. Pizza at 6 PM, followed by a tour of Midcoast's Bombardier jet completion center's back shops at 7:30pm. The formal part of the meeting will be very short so we can maximize our time visiting Midcoast. A BIG thanks to Bob McDaniel for setting up this visit.
MIDWEST REGIONAL FLY-IN: We are only a few weeks away from the Midwest Regional Fly-In at St Louis Downtown Airport. The event is scheduled for 5 May 2007 and Chapter 64 will be in full force providing cold drinks and Young Eagle flights. The plan for a small team to begin set-up on Friday 4 May with the majority of support on Saturday and Sunday. If you are planning on flying into the event, please let us know during the May meeting. Bob McDaniel will post a link to the arrival and departure procedures for all pilots. Remember, the first weekend in May finds the Cardinals at home and an NHRA drag race in town and this means the will be a TFR keeping us locked down at the show for the better part of the afternoon--what could be better. We need for all members to help with this local event, so please help by signing up during the May meeting.
AIRBORNE-GET-TOGETHER: The flying season is finally upon us, so time to host an Airborne-Get-Together. Airborne-Get-Together will meet on a Saturday or Sunday at some location and fly out for lunch…actually, lunch is just an excuse to go flying. Matters not where we go, as long as we meet and fly. You need not have an airplane…all members are welcome. We will host a sign-up sheet so those of you who are “airplane deficient” can join up with those who have empty seats. Just remember, the location for lunch must be so an Aeronca Champ can fly there on a tank of gas (with reserves). We can talk at the May meeting.
WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR AVIATION PRODUCTS: Many of you have been in the local area for years--decades even--so where do you get your aviation supplies? Of course there is Wicks…my favor aviation jobber--however, there may be other locations to purchase aviation related material. Where is the best store for aviation petroleum products, welding supplies (to include gas) and aviation grade steel and/or aluminum…to mention a few needs. Let us know and we will post on the website for all to see. Good business for our suppliers and great value to our members. Drop me a line on email (EAA48@aol.com) or call me at 618-628-1907.
TRIVIA: Finally, let’s see how knowledgeable you really are. Who was the first hang glider pilot to demonstrate powered flight at Oshkosh making him the “Father of Ultralight Aviation?”
Keep thinking and don’t forget to…
…keep ‘em flying.
