New Business: Our upcoming May 6 meeting will feature a presentation by Diana Votaw on her Cub Crafter Sport Cub S2. She intends to fly the plane in for show and tell. She operates under sport pilot rules so we will start the meeting around 5 show so she can return to Sparta before sundown. The Midwest Regional fly-in is on May 24th, a one day event , and we will support it as a club - we’ll be selling soda and flying Young Eagles. A pilot briefing will be held at 8 AM and we’ll fly from 9-noon. Breakfast starting at 7 – gates open at 8, only $1 admission! There will also be an auto show with Corvettes and other classics. A work party will be held Tuesday, April 8. We need to hang the bulletin board, unpack some stuff and organize it, put up shelving and knock out part of the wall to expand the area. We would like to start work at 6PM. The second annual Sparta Fly-in will be held on June 14th this year. This event is again dedicated to draw attention to help brain tumor research. Brian Kissinger is working to collect at least $100,000 for brain tumor and cancer research . We are trying to get car clubs to participate. It’s a lot of fun, the chapter provided the labor and sold food at the event last year. We are looking for Fly-ins that we can go to as a group. If you know of some in the region please bring the details with you to the next meeting and we can discuss and make plans to attend. It was discussed and decided that we should buy some shirts with the club logo that we can sell to members and interested parties. A motion was made and passed to go forward with this.
Todd Drenkhaus has a Luscomb that is LSA qualified. Walt Turk is building fairings – the plane is off the gear legs. Canopy and cowling are back off for modifications. He is shooting for a maiden flight in August .Larry’s plane is sitting next to Walts - There is space for another project in the hangar at Shafer’s if anyone is looking for a spot. Mike Brenner mentioned a neat website for making arrangements for airport cars. The concept is a neat idea. Check it out at www.airportcarsclub.com 50/50 Drawing- $22 won by Dwight Gooden. New members – Meeting adjourned @7:42PM. Dennis followed the meeting with a presentation on the DaiseyMae. It is a very simple airplane and was designed and built by a former RC airplane builder. THE MAY LEADING EDGE (Message from the President) May Meeting Time Change: Be advised the May meeting will begin at 5 PM vice the normal 7PM timeframe. Reason is our guest speaker, Diana Votaw, will be flying her Cub Crafter Sport Cub S2 for a “show-and-tell” session. Diana is operating the aircraft under Sport Pilot regulations and has to return to her home base before sunset. The formal portion of the meeting will be abbreviated so we can spend as much time with Diana and her Sport Cub as possible. This meeting should be very interesting, so please make plans to attend--early. Meeting Room Renovation Nearly Complete: The meeting room now has a new more open look thanks to our membership. We removed the dividing wall between the kitchen and meeting areas allowing us more room for seating our members. In addition we hung the Information Board and located a newer refrigerator with more useable space to replace our current “ancient” model. I would like to personally thank the members who helped with the effort; Larry “Mr. Trim” Frey, Bill “The Mudder” Roland, Bill “Make it Happen“ Aanstad, A BIG THANKS goes out to task leader Mike “The Boss” Lotz for organizing and leading the renovation effort. New Tool Acquisitions: We made a few “free” tool acquisitions since the last meeting . First, we have a 20gallon 3 HP Sears air compressor for the chapter. This will allow us to purchase air powered tools. The compressor is presently set up for 220 VAC; however, it can be easily converted to 110 VAC service so more members can use the equipment. Regardless, we now have source of “useable hot air” for our members. In addition we have a slightly used VCR- and remote-capable 31 inch JVC TV (circa 1999 model and it is very clean looking). We plan to either replace the existing unit or hook this TV up in series so video presentations can be seen by the audience. Midwest Fly In: I would like to thank all the members who signed up to support the Midwest Regional Fly-in scheduled for Saturday 24 May 2008 at the Downtown Saint Louis Airport. This one-day event is important to the local flying community and to our chapter, so your support is critical the events success. We plan to fly Young Eagles, so we can use as many volunteers as possible. Sparta Fly In: Another important event for the chapter is the 2nd Annual Spata Fly-in scheduled for 14 Jun 08 at the Sparta-Hunter Airport in Sparta IL. The proceeds from this event go to the National Brain Tumor Foundation to support brain tumor research. The event is the dream of Chapter 64 Person of the Year, Brian Kissinger, and is part of his quest to raise $1 million in funds for brain tumor research in the next 10 years. Chapter participation is critical to the success of this event…we really help make the event happen…so we need you to help with this event as well as the Midwest Regional Fly-in. Please find the time to volunteer for these upcoming events. Volunteering is what our organization is based on a these events definitely need our support. Your time will be well spent knowing your are helping the flying community and the cancer research. That’s a wrap for this months Leading Edge. Thanks for your support and thanks for making Chapter 64 the Best In the Midwest. Until we meet at the May meeting, don’t forget to… …keep ‘em flying. dd |
