JUNE 2008
OFFICERS: PRESIDENT-DENNIS D’ANGELO
VICE PRESIDENT-WALT TURK
SECRETARY-RON PEEK
TREASURER-LARRY FREY
WEBMASTER-BOB MCDANIEL
PROGRAM DIRECTOR – RICK RAY

Greetings from Chapter 64”-
The May minutes are as follows:
May 6, Hangar Two
The meeting was called to order at 5:51PM by our chapter president Dennis D’Angelo. Dennis began the meeting by making an award presentation to Bill Rohland for work done recently putting the finishing touches on the drywall which included the mudding around the corners and edges of the opening recently made where we knocked out the wall. Bill was presented with a cheap, I mean classy, bottle of wine. Good job Bill! Thanks goes out to Mike Lotz and all others that helped with the project.

The weather foiled the plans for Diane Votaw to fly her Super Cub in for show and tell but Diane was on site and gave a great PowerPoint presentation with some outstanding aerial photos. The presentation covered the flight home from buying the plane near Seattle. She also had a bonus presentation of the Sparta area. Dennis thanked her and also presented her with a classy bottle of wine. Check out Diane’s website at www.votawaviation.com.

Secretary’s Report: Motion made and seconded to forego reading of the secretary’s report due to mailing of the newsletter – motion passed unanimously.
Treasurer’s Report: We started the year with $33,984. We had income from dues, 50/50 sales, food sales, interest on CDs. We also had expenses of flowers for funeral, materials to fix up the room, propane for grill, dues to OshKosh, etc. We now have a balance of $34,569.06. A motion was made by Doc Hurd and seconded by Bill Bucholtz to accept the treasurers’ report as read. The motion passed unanimously.

There was a brief discussion about renewing the aviation scholarship that our chapter typically sponsors at Southwest Illinois College(SWIC). A motion was made by Bill Buchholt and seconded by Walt Hubert to donate $1000 to the scholarship fund.

A motion was also made and seconded to pay the museum dues of $150 to continue our membership and support of the aviation museum on site at the airport.
Correspondence: None
Old Business: We discussed preparation and need for volunteers for the Midwest Regional fly-in on May 24th. Our chapter will be flying Young Eagles again this year.

We discussed the need for volunteers for working the Sparta fly-in. Bring your airplanes. There will be another bombing contest and other events. There will be raffles, things for the crowd to do, and they are getting some T shirts made. Bring your friends along with classic cars, hot rods, etc. as there will be an opportunity to put them on display.

Bill Buckholtz volunteered to research and organize the trip to Dayton, Ohio – National Museum of the Air Force. We are talking about a fall trip.

New Business: We discussed the possibility of our chapter sponsoring the EAA's B-17 Aluminum Overcast for 2009. This will require some volunteers to support. It may or may not coincide with the Midwest Regional fly-in. It was decided to table this for a month and re-visit this at the next meeting. To learn more about this program visit their website at http://www.b17.org/tour/chapters.asp

Dennis recommended we buy an In-Focus video projector to support visitors giving presentations. We think we can buy one of these for approximately $750. It could be mounted high on the wall to clear the audience and project onto a wall or we could also buy a pull down screen. Bill Buckholtz will research this and bring information back to the next meeting for further discussion and decision. Larry Frey is going to take care of getting a curtain for the window so we can darken the room for presentations. Rick will get pricing on replacement carpet and /or linoleum.

We have a series of books on the shelves – we have more than we need. We need to go thru and see which are needed and which are excess.

Dennis D’Angelo, our chapter president, will be leaving the area here in 3-4 days. He has landed a good job in Germany and is going to be there for several years. Dennis stated “The chapter is doing some great things, fly-ins, brain tumor research, rocket experiments, etc.” He asks that you as members keep volunteering, keep things going and don’t give up on the mission. He will have the same e-mail address and will stay in contact. Dennis - we thank you for your service and leadership and all you’ve done for the chapter. We will miss you while you are gone and look forward to your return!!

Meeting Schedule – June 3 meeting at Hangar Two
August 5 meeting at Hangar Two - Presentation by John Murphy, L-39 and HeliCycle pilot
Committee Reports
Librarian-
Technical Advisor-
Program Director-
Young Eagles-
Projects-
Don Hickman - Rejuvenated a glider and recently flew it – it flew great. They also have a modified super cub at the St. Louis Sailing club near Highland, IL.

Walt Turk – Continuing saga, ready to put belly skin on and fixing things he didn’t like. May have wings back on by end of the month and run the engine. It is an Aeor-V conversion 80 horse.

Diane Earhardt and Gary – Everything is on schedule for the rocket launch Oct 4 in Steelville, still developing systems for hybrid motor, using cellulose now for fuel, rubber didn’t work out so well. They are looking for ceramic coating for the nozzles.

Larry Frey – Down to fiberglass and canopy/fairing work. Empennage and wing tips are on. Final assembly – hope to take to paint shop by July 1.

Bill Ansdtat – Recently looked at buying a Legal Eagle in West Plains Mo. It had a 32 ft wingspan. The engine is a Generac v twin generating 36 HP@ 3600RPM. It was swinging a 74 X 44 prop. Engine was very unique and it used a Valley Engineering gear drive. Here’s the best part - it only burns 5 qts per hour at cruise.

Tech Tip from Walt – to start a pal nut, take a socket and fill it with nuts, then put the pal nut in on top, this will assist in getting the pal nut started square and straight. It spins right on!!

50/50 Drawing- Larry Frey won the $21 and donated it back to the club. Way to go Larry!!
Welcome to our new members:
Jeff Ryan is a C5 pilot and Rob Connell, from Alaska, is looking to build a Fly Baby.

The meeting was adjourned @ 7:50 with 35 members present.

THE JUNE LEADING EDGE (Message from the President)

I would like to thank all the members of Chapter 64 who supported me over the past 17 months I have served as chapter president. I am moving to Stuttgart Germany to take a job with the Department of Defense, so Walt Turk will take over the leadership role with support from Larry Frey and Ron Peek.

We should be very proud of the accomplishments the chapter accomplished during the last year and a half. We helped Brian Kissinger with his quest to raise money for brain tumor research, supported the Midwest Fly In at Downtown Saint Louis Airport, started our own flying event at the Sparta-Hunter airport to raise money for cancer research, provided scholarships to local students working in aviation, joined hands with the Gateway Area Ultralight Association to expand our aviation experiences, moved to a new meeting room and, finally, completely renovated that room to meet the needs of our expanding membership. Most of all, the chapter is working with a greater purpose, focused on helping each other and others outside the aviation community who are in need (i.e., National Brain Tumor Foundation)…keep it up.

I am proud to have been a member of the chapter and had the privilege to have spent time with the best aviators in the Midwest. While I will be away from the chapter I still plan to write about aviation happenings in Europe to keep you abreast of what is happening elsewhere in the world of sport flying. I wish all of you the very best and much success in the future. Remember, Chapter 64 is the Best in the Midwest, so continue to support the chapter, each other and don’t forget to…

…keep ‘em flying.
