“Greetings from Chapter 64”- PLEASE NOTE: DUE TO OSHKOSH, THE
AUGUST MEETING WILL BE HELD ON THE SECOND TUESDAY IN AUGUST—TUESDAY,
AUGUST 9TH AT DOWNTOWN AIRPORT.
The July minutes are as follows:
July 5th, 2005 Home of Larry and Kathy Frey-- Called to order: 7:00. 28 members and guests present. A big “Thanks” goes to the Frey’s for their hospitality in holding the meeting, and showing off the RV project. Let’s not forget the terrific BBQ! The corn on the cob was the best I’ve ever had!! As I write this, I am packing my bags to head north for the Greatest Show on Earth!! Can’t wait to get there and hear the rumble of the radials, the smell of jet fuel, and oh yeah, the 2 latest creations from genius, Burt Rutan: Spaceship One and Global Flyer. If you are at the show, give me a call at 618-410-0335 and we can meet up and talk airplanes.
Secretary’s Report: Waived due to newsletter mailing
Treasurer’s Report: Accepted, the club balance as of 7/5/05 was $14,360.46, this after the usual expenses and outgoing. In addition to the usual, we paid the New Athens St. Clair County Real Estate taxes of $716.17 and the $200 donation to the Paul Whelan Scholarship. This leaves a net gain of ($387.30) loss. We have had annual expenses this year of $3,563.60 on net income of $3, 176.30.
Correspondence: None
Old Business: The tug was once again brought up and since we
have not received a check from Ozark Air Services, it was decided to sell
the tug to the St. Louis Air and Space Museum for $200. Mike mentioned that
Mark Harter had emailed him inquiring about the Chapter 64 scholarship. He
wanted to know if this $500 could be paid to an A&P student. A discussion
was had at which time the club decided that this money should be paid as originally
decided upon, to a flight type program.
Mike Brenner brought up the club hangar project. A lengthy discussion ensued.
We passed around a preliminary budget sheet and explained that we hoped to
sell 3 hangars at a profit. The money gained will be used to build a club
hangar/shop/meeting room. The Board of Directors feels this is a feasible
undertaking. Once the hangars are built and sold, we will have a permanent
income in the form of a lease made to the purchaser of each hangar. They will
pay the chapter a set amount per square foot on a yearly basis. We will sign
a leasehold with Downtown Airport and will also make a profit on this re-lease
of the ground. Specific dollar amounts were discussed but for the privacy
of potential buyers, we choose not to put the dollar amount in the newsletter
since the newsletter is posted on the web.
Bob McDaniel brought a preliminary contract concerning the land leasehold,
at which time Walt Hubert made a motion to have Curt Lindauer, our resident
attorney, make changes he sees fit for the benefit of the club and resubmit
to the airport. Bill Florich made a second and motion carried unanimously.
Walt Hubert also made a motion that the membership allow the Board of Directors
to undertake all steps necessary in going forward with this project. Bill
Florich once again made a second and a vote was taken. This also unanimously
passed. Let the record show, Bob McDaniel abstained from both votes.
New Business: Bob thanked all who helped during the 4th of July Air Show escorting
the public on to the ramp.
Meeting Schedule
August meeting will be held on the 2nd Tuesday in August, at Downtown Airport
on Tuesday, August 9th at Hangar one. This will be an annual one week delay
due to AirVenture.
Mike and Maggie Brenner agreed to provide pizzas at 6:00. Thanks!
Librarian- None
Technical Advisor- None
Program Director- Walt said that the August Meeting will be a BD-5 work party.
Young Eagles- No Report at the July meeting, although today, I was able to read a story on Chapter 64 on STLtoday.com Here is an excerpt: “His parents thought he was crazy, but Bob McDaniel knew what he wanted to do with his life. As a teen-ager growing up in Cahokia, McDaniel often would drive down to ST. Louis Downtown Airport in Sauget and itch his curiosity for aviation. “ I would go around and just ask questions,” McDaniel said. “If one person chased me off, I would go somewhere else where they would tolerate me.” Persistent and intuitive, McDaniel started mowing the lawns around the runways and fueling airplanes, working his way up the chain of command. When he wasn’t working, he would pick the brains of any pilot he could find. The Columbia resident has given more than 100 children the chance to see what he fell in love with as a teen-ager by offering his time to give them their first flying experience. “Kids today don’t have the opportunity that I did,” McDaniel said. “With Homeland Security and regulations, they can’t just walk in an airport and start asking questions like I did.” With the help of the EAA, McDaniel, along with 15 other volunteer pilots, gives kids between the ages of 8-17 a crash course in flying, showing them how the instruments work, how an airplane flies and what to expect when they are in the air.” To read the whole article, go the website STLtoday.com or Chapter 64’s website.
Projects- Walt stated he might be selling his PT 26 to the guy that gave it to him in the first place. Walter Turk has been working away on his Sonex. He is currently putting his windshield in and thinks he is one year away from flying. I guess he’s so busy he didn’t have time to clean up as he came to the meeting with plexi glass dust all over him. Mark Sletten brought a section of fiberglass on to which he has sprayed a speckled finish paint. He bought the paint at Wal-Mart very cheap and said he will more than likely use this on his interior surfaces. This paint has held up to his gasoline test. He also brought in a trim wheel that he plans on using on his panel for elevator trim. He showed the club some eyeball air vents, all aluminum that look really nice. They can be purchased on the Lancair website for about $65. We had one guest present, his name is Brad Jones. He thinks he wants to be a pilot. I hope our ramblings didn’t change his mind.
Tools-Jim Stoops absent
50/50 Drawing- Won by Mrs. Knebel. I think she has won 70%. I’ll try to get a count for you.
Meeting adjourned: at 8:00
On a sad note, a former Chapter 64 member passed away, George Adamson from Collinsville.
