TREASURER-LARRY FREY
WEBMASTER-BOB MCDANIEL
PROGRAM DIRECTOR – RICK RAY
“Greetings from Chapter 64”-
The June minutes are as follows:
June 5, Hangar One
We met outside Hangar One and members were treated to a tour of the Outback
blimp before the meeting began. We also took a look at our future new meeting
room on the ground floor of Hangar Two. The meeting was called to order
@ 7:55PM by Larry frey, substituting for a tardy president who showed up
soon after we began.
Secretary’s Report: A motion was made to forego reading of the secretary’s
report due to mailing of the newsletter – motion passed unanimously.
Treasurer’s Report: Larry Frey gave a treasurers’ report highlighting
recent income and expenses. We received $500 from Brian’s matching
fund of the BD-5 sale. The new balance is $32,984. A recently expired CD
was discussed and we decided to roll it over at the current going interest
rate.
Correspondence: Walt said - Dutchmen may be close to going out of business
but so far they are hanging in there and invited everyone to a Poker run
on June 24 from 11-3.
The Air and space museum sent a thank you card for the donation we recently
made to their organization.
Old Business: Founders day fly-in on June 23/24 at Gateway Airpark –everyone
invited. Music, beer, games at the park nearby.
The RC aircraft guys were the highlight of the Midwest fly-in. The weather
conditions were just to poor to safely fly.
Brian’s flight took off on June 1. Wendy Seller provided the air to
air flight platform for taking some pictures of Brian. Brian reported he
was doing .141 mach over the Appalachians. You can follow his blog at briansflight.com
Brian is trying to raise $100,000 for brain cancer research. All money for
the flight is coming out of Brian’s own pocket and 100% of the donations
go to cancer research. This will be approximately a 3 week tour.
A motion made to cover fuel costs for the photo op ride provided by Wendy Sellers. The motion was seconded, voted on and carried.
New Business: Dennis arrived and talked about the potential future trip to Dayton. We could take the Convair 440 at cost of gas/oil - about $200/hd. or go by bus estimated to be close to less than $100/each plus the cost of staying overnight. Member suggested we go when the World War 1 planes are there. Dennis will look up dates and we’ll discuss further at the next meeting. Another option is van/car pool.
Aerolab is offering 12 low camp kits to each EAA chapter at a cost of approximate $19,000 each. It is power by the ROTEC engine. Go to http://www.aerolab.it/pages/eng.htm to find more information.
Grey Eagles – Dennis informed us about the Grey Eagles program at the last EAA chapter he was in. It is an opportunity to get older folks flying. This was a way to support that group of potential pilots and increase chapter membership. Jerry and Dennis will look into a way of putting it together. Motion was made to further the progress of this program. Vote was taken – none opposed – all in favor so motion passed.
New meeting room – Our existing facility has steep stairs and Bob McDaniels has found another location in Hangar 2 at the ground level. The group toured the room. Hangar 2 is a historic site and has longevity that the existing building does not have. A motion was made to explore that opportunity and the vote passed unanimously. Dennis suggested we start with a new fridge and microwave. Motion made and seconded to purchase a new refrigerator and microwave– vote passed unanimously. We will clean and paint before moving in. An additional motion made to provide a slush fund of $200 to be used at the chapter president’s discretion for additional items as needed to prepare this room for our use. This motion was voted on and also passed.
Todd presented the “FOOTPRINTS at Cardinal Glennon” program. They are looking for pilots and certified aircraft to fly school age children with life threatening illnesses. The goal is to provide a respite for children and family during treatment. If you are interested contact Erin Drenkhahn FOOTPRINTS volunteer at: drenkhea@slu.edu. Erin is the daughter of EAA64 member Todd Drenkhahn.
Gerry Werth will be providing map reading class at the GAUA meeting on Thursday. All invited.
Meeting Schedule
The next meeting is June 28th at Hangar One and a private air show will
be given. This will be our July meeting but due to the fourth of July holiday
and the opportunity to hold this meeting on the date of the air show, we
decided to move the July meeting forward to June 28th. This airshow is the
social event for the 2007 International Fuel Ethanol Workshop & Expo
being held in St. Louis. The organizers have requested to hold their Thursday
evening social event at the airport using the Greater St. Louis Air &
Space Museum as their focal point with a 30-minute air show featured. Should
be an interesting event!! See our chapter website at www.eaa64.org for more
information.
Committee Reports
Librarian-none
Technical Advisor-none
Program Director- We might go to New Athens to see the RV 7 in August
Young Eagles- Weren’t able to fly Young Eagles during the fly-in.
Did fly 2 but weather limited others. This is the 15th year. Greg Downen
volunteered to post the number flown thus far by the chapter on the side
of the hangar on the EAA64 sign. Anybody at OshGosh on Wed evening and wants
to attend the YE coordinator’s meeting, let Larry know and he will
get you tickets.
Projects-Mike brought his plane to the hangar at Columbia – no problems.
Local pals helped unload it. He wants to put on wings and rudders. Needs
to drill holes for splash plates. Next is prop and putting in fuel. May
be fired up by the end of next week. Mike hopes to be flying by the end
of the month. Mike bought it last May partially assembled. Mike is looking
for a gas cap that has a gas gauge built into it that is visible from the
side, sort of like a compass. He saw one on a biplane here but doesn’t
know where to get one. If anyone know give Mike a call.
Billy has Buckaneer XA and no assembly documentation. Has assembly drawings
but looking for more doc. Can anyone help. Can anyone advise on how to calculate
W&B envelope. The EAA mothership may be able to help!?!
A member also suggested Billy look up and contact the Florida Flying Gators.
Walt said a max of 2 weeks to get his Champ flying.
50/50 Drawing-Keith Smith won drawing and donated proceeds back to the club. Thanks Keith!
The meeting adjourned @ 8:44PM with 31 members and guests present.
For Sale: Henry Hurd has Hot wire equipment for hot wiring
foam to shape for building a composite plane. He has one that is 2 X 8 ft
wire and one 4 ft wire and ballast to plug into wall. If interested give
Henry a call @ 618-398-3393.
THE JULY LEADING EDGE (Message from the President)
Brain’s Flight Start to Finish: On June 1, 2007 Brain Kissinger began his flight to garner $100,000 for brain tumor research and today, June 21, 2007, that flight was successfully completed by Brian with a superb landing to the east at Saint Louis Downtown Airport. Brian was met by his family and members of Chapter 64. Bob McDaniel, airport manager of Downtown Saint Louis Airport, made access so news crews and family members could capture this epic moment. Brian flew for a little over 70 hours during the trip…yes; the L-4 flew great…and collected over $30,000 for cancer research along the way. Now that is a little short of his goal, but we have a long flying season left with a trip to Oshkosh where addition donations should bring him to the mark. Why was this flight so important to Mr. Kissinger? Brian’s right hand man, Todd Drenkhann, gave me a little insight as we celebrated Brain’s return. Todd, also a cancer survivor, stated that life is something that he and Brian never take for granted…life is like a new gift for them… and their wish is to give to others who are suffering from this disease so they may live life to the fullest too. This is a wonderful wish for all of us to take to heart…to help other who are in need of our good fortune so they may live better.
Now a trip like this isn’t a one person show, there is a strong support group back on the home front and Brian’s family has been with him during his journey this special return celebration. Brian’s wife Priscilla, and daughters; Alexa, Gaby and Belle were really the backbone of this trip and we would like to personally thank them for all they did to make Brian’s flight a success. You are a wonderful family and Brian is blessed to have you all…so is Chapter 64.
So what’s next for Brian? No rest for the weary, just more barnstorming to obtain the $100,000 in donations. We can help Brian by advertising his website and garnering support for his cause…it’s the least the chapter can do. EAA Chapter 64 is blessed to have members who support each other, regardless of the need, and we are most blessed to have Brian and his family as members of our great organization. Welcome home good friend.
July Meeting Notice…We Meet Next Thursday June 28th: The July meeting will be held early this year…on June 28, 2007. This is so we can visit with the Van Guard Vans RV 4 formation team. The team is unique in that they fuel there aircraft with Ethanol alcohol…one of the bio-fuels you may have seen lately in the news. The team is here to help publicize the Ethanol Conference which is being held the week of 25-29 June. In addition, there will be Young Eagles flights to support, an RC aircraft aerobatic show and a special presentation. Of course there is the usual great food and comradeship as always. Don’t miss this event…it will be a great show. Oh yes, again I must thank Bob McDaniel for making this event happen…it doesn’t get any better than having the airport manager of Illinois’ third busiest airport as a member of the Chapter 64 team…many thanks again Bob.
The Bus To Dayton: We plan on establishing the date for the trip to the
National Museum of the United States Air Force at the next meeting. There
are three proposed dates:
31 Aug - 2 Sep 07 -- Giant Scale RC Model Aircraft Air Show -- Labor Day
Weekend
21-23 Sep 07 -- Dawn Patrol Rendezvous WWI aircraft and air show
16-18 Nov 07 -- Nothing special going on at this time…just a good
date before T-day
It takes a good two days to really do the museum justice; however, many of us would like to see and do other things while in Dayton, so the dates in Aug and Sep give us multiple activities while in Ohio. We will discuss at the July (in June) meeting. Until then…
…keep ‘em flying.
