THE SEPTEMBER LEADING EDGE (Message from the President)

The month of August was a hot one and so was the local flying. There were a lot of aerial happenings in August…the National Luscombe Association Fly-in, Tommy George’s Ultralight Gathering in Edinburg IL and the Saint Genevieve MO Fly-in just to mention a few. So as the summer haze transitions to the blue skies of fall, we have much planned and a new look for the chapter meeting room.

NEW DIGS: We plan to officially move the chapter from the Hangar 1 location to the new office space in Hangar 2. The new Chapter 64 Meeting room is located on the parking lot side of Hangar 2 next to the Chapter 64 sign…yes Bob “I can move anything with a forklift” McDaniel moved the sign to the new location. The new meeting location was freshly painted by the membership on 18 Aug 07 and the place looks great. A BIG THANKS goes out to the painting party of Larry Frey, Aanstad, Buckholz, D'Angello, Drenkhann, Frey, Hase, Holzhauer, Hamilton, Kissinger, Loiseau, and McDaniel. While we still have a few lose ends (painting that is) to clean up, we are planning on using the September meeting as a moving party to transfer our equipment from the old to new location. Come prepared for a short business meeting followed by a work party to move the equipment…dress accordingly For those of you who can’t do heavy lifting, we ask you provide supervisory skills to ensure the rest of the membership moves our chapter material in an orderly manner…all members inputs are needed and welcomed.

CHAPTER SUPPORT FOR THE SPARTA FLY-IN 6 OCT 07: As we mentioned last month Brian Kissinger is spearheading a sport fly-in at the Sparta-Hunter Airport (KSAR for you GPS types) in Sparta, IL. The event is planned for 6 Oct 07 (rain date is 7 Oct 07) and will include a spot landing and flour bombing contest, potential car show (if we can convince the local Hot Rod Club to participate), food and friendship. Any income will go to the Brain Tumor Foundation…they put up the money for the insurance. We pledged some chapter support to cook food, sell drinks, park airplanes and help with the contest. This effort is for a good cause and will support Brian’s ultimate goal of collecting $100K for brain tumor research. Come to the meeting ready to volunteer for this effort…Brian will have a sign-up sheet going around. Thanks for the support.

TRIP TO NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE AIR FORCE: It will not be long before we will be headed to the National Museum of the Air Force in Dayton Ohio. I will need a head count to find billeting at the location. Travel cost will be minimal since we are paying for fuel and food and lodging for the driver. If we can’t fill the bus with our membership we plan to offer seats to the Gateway Area Ultralight Club and the Illinois Pilot’s Association. Please give this event your utmost consideration…we guarantee a good time.

THE GATHERING OF MUSTANGS AND LEGENDS COLUMBUS OH, 27-30 SEP O7: The final round-up of P-51 Mustangs and the legends who flew them is scheduled for 27-30 Sep 07 at the Rickenbacker International Airport, Columbus OH. If you are interested take a look at the attached website for more details http://www.gml2007.com/

This could be the largest gathering of P-51 (100 plus anticipated), so it would be well worth the 7-hour drive to this event.

OCT MEETING PROGRAM: Plan for a presentation on Gyrocopter flying during the 2 Oct 07 meeting.

I will not be at the Sept meeting, so Walt will have the lead for actions. Thanks for your continued support and it is my hope you all enjoy our new facility…let me know what you think by sending and email to EAA48@aol.com. Until we meet in Oct don’t forget to…

…keep ‘em flying.
