THE NOVEMBER LEADING EDGE (Message from the President)

With the coming of fall, the best part of the flying season is upon us. With the cooler air, beautiful blue days and changing colors; the fall season is a great time of year to be out flying and airborne our chapter members were this past month. Take a look…

1st Annual Sparta Fly In: The National Brain Tumor Foundation, Brian Kissinger and Marvin Campbell hosted a superb fly-in at the Sparta Airport in Sparta IL during the first part of October. The event was supported by Chapter 64 and our sister organization the Gateway Area Ultralight Association. Members accomplished cooking duties, flying event direction and…well, of course…we flew in the events too. The event winners were; Flour Bombing Contest – Marvin Campbell in his Stearman to boot; Shortest Takeoff – Bill Aanastad in his Quicksilver MX; and Spot Landing – Greg Gremminger in his Magni gyrocopter. Congratulations to all winners and thanks to the winners who all donated their winnings to the National Brain Tumor Foundation…total donations equaled over $500 for the event. Marvin and Brian plan to host and even bigger event next year with the hopes of raising $3,000 for brain tumor research. You can be certain we will support this great event for a super cause.

Sackman Airfield Fly-in, Columbia IL: Another super fly-in with great airplanes, food and people--of course many of you know this since most of you are members of the Columbia Flying Club. There were hot rods, old and new motorcycles, antique and classic airplanes (yes, my Champ is a Classic and it was there) and a plethora of homebuilt airplanes. I finally got the chance to see, up close and personal, Mike and Maggie Brenner’s Zenith Zodiac CH 601 and what a great looking ship it is…it pays to be retired (I’ll soon find out how much)…beautiful job you two. Along with Mike and Maggie; Brian Kissinger, Todd Drenkhann, Walt Hubert and Jim Stoops showed at the event. Jim flew his gorgeous Piper Pacer into Sackman and was parked at show center...well deserved too. While there were a lot of airplanes the winds did keep a greater number from attending…especially the gang from the Dutchman airport where the cross-winds exceeded 20 mph. This is definitely a show the Champ and I will attend in the future…I can’t wait until next year.

“Gyro Greg” Gremminger To Make Presentation At November Meeting: Greg Gremminger owner/operator of Magni (gyrocopters) USA (www.magnigyro.com), will make a presentation on gyrocopters at the next meeting. Greg has been flying gyrocopters for many years and is a well know gyrocopter instructor who sells Magni gyros. Greg’s presentation will address the gyro industry, the differences between fixed wing and gyrocopter flight, what it’s like to fly a gyrocopter and what it takes to transition into this type of aircraft. This should be a very interesting presentation, so please plan on attending. Ok, onto chapter business.

National Museum Of The Air Force Trip: The trip date is rapidly coming, so I will be asking for commitments at the November meeting to solidify attendance. We are looking for an early departure from Downtown Saint Louis Airport so we can make the entire trip in one…long…day. Be ready to cast you vote for attending this great event.

Member of Year Award Nominees: It is time now to make your nominations for Member of the Year Award. The chapter leadership will make the final determination in December and make the presentation at the Holiday Party in Jan 08. Member of the Year Awards is presented to the member who best epitomizes the spirit of aviation, is an outstanding spokesperson for the chapter, EAA and the flying community, and best represents the chapter to the local community. Send email nominations to EAA48@aol.com or give your written nominations to Walt Turk, Larry Frey, Ron Peek or Dennis D’Angelo.

Check out the Chapter 64 website!!!: If you have internet access you better visit the Chapter 64 website at eaa64.org. A BIG THANKS to Bob McDaniel (our webmeister) who has out done himself again. The site looks great and provides the user with easy access to a multitude of chapter and local flying information. I find myself going back to the site to find links about local flying activities all the time. Here’s the cool part, each month Bob will highlight a member’s airplane on opening page of the website…that alone should keep you coming back to the website. Oh yes, should you need inflight photos of your airplane, Bill Aanstad and I are ready to help at the drop of a hat…fast RVs and Zenith Zodiacs need not apply. The October cover picture shows WWII and Korean veteran (87 years young) Bob Morris flying Brian Kissinger’s 1942 L-4 in formation with my Champ during the Sparta Fly-in. Mr. Morris flew the Hump supporting China during WWII and he did a super job flying Brian’s Cub. In fact Mr. Morris informed us after the flight he hadn’t lead a formation since Korea…you would have never know it. Thanks to Bill Aanstad for arranging Bob’s visit, Brian Kissinger for offering Mr. Morris the opportunity to fly once again and thanks to the members of Chapter 64 for leading the area sport aviation community and make flying fun. It is an honor to be your president. Until next month…

…keep ‘em flying.
