Romanticism

Exhibit III (Nature)

Due Wednesday, June 1

Issues:

        Rise of Common Man

        Wild Nature vs. idealized nature

        Country Life vs. city life

        Unity of Man in Nature

        Nature for Meditation and Introspection

        Search for the Sublime

I. Write a first-person narrative about one of the issues. For example, you might have a person (it need not be you) experiencing the unity of man in nature, or searching for the sublime.  You will want to include reflections and or descriptions of nature in your work.   Length: 2 to 3 pages in prose, or a page or more in poetry.

II. Find music that in your opinion reflects one of the issues of this Unit.

a. The music must have been composed during the Romantic Era (1825-1900)

b.  In writing briefly list why you feel this music fits the issue.  Be sure to include your definition of the issue.

        c. Include a written description of the musical elements.

III. Create a work of visual art that reflects one of the issues.

a.  In writing briefly list why you feel this image fits the issue.  Be sure to include your definition of the issue.

b. Explain your use of the principles of design that are seen in the work.

c. Present your artwork to the class, explaining its composition, any symbolism, and why you feel this image fits the issue you selected.

IV. Perform for the class providing a visual, physical, and aural interpretation of one or more the issues in this unit.   The performance may be dance, mime, musical performance, etc. but not a reading.  The performance will be evaluated based upon its demonstrated depth of understanding. For example, does the performance merely reflect a definition of the issue or does it expose the real meaning and social characteristics of the issue.  Creativity and depth of expression are most important.

Remember that your explanation and justification of your presentation is as equally important as the items presented.  The goal is for you to demonstrate depth of understanding not merely definitions.

ALL WRITTEN WORK MUST BE TYPED!
