Romanticism
Purpose: To explore the issues and concepts of 19th Century European
Romanticism as expressed through Art, Music, and Literature.
Grades: Individual student grades are earned primarily through presentation
of exhibits and maintaining a class double entry journal. Individual class assignments
are made for each area: music, art, literature. Occasional class quizzes and
class participation in discussion are also considered. There will be a major
project each term and a final exam. Breakdown is approximately

Exhibits: At the conclusion of each curriculum unit students will present
an exhibit which will demonstrate the students understanding of the issues discussed
in the unit. The exhibit will involve creative and/or analytical writing, creative
expression through personal art works, presentation of appropriate art works
from the 19th c., presentation of appropriate music from the 19th c., and some
form of expressive performance (singing, playing an instrument, mime, theatre,
multi-media presentation, dramatic presentation).
Journals: Each student will maintain a double entry journal in a notebook
reserved exclusively for the Romanticism class. The journal will be collected
periodically and graded. The right hand page of the journal will include class
notes for each class. The facing page on the left will include the students
reflections, thoughts, and comments about the issues and material discussed
in class. This is done for every class.
Class Assignments: There will be individual assignments in art, music,
and literature. Each student needs to have access to a cassette player as music
recordings will be provided on cassette.
Term Project: There will be one Major writing project each term. First quarter
will be a literature project, second quarter will be a music/art project.
***Assignments must be turned in on the day due or there will be a 10
point loss. If you are absent on the day the assignment is due it will be due
the day you return.
