Why Dust-Free refinishing is important
Dust-Free refinishing is a new idea. It is of great benefit to ourselves as well as the customers, especially those with allergies or respiratory problems. I was developing allergies to dust myself after 25 years in the business and that's when I decided to design a dustless method. I ceased having allergies.
The usual method of dust collection which most floor companies still use is a flimsy cloth bag attached to the sanding machine which collects only the larger dust but allows the fine dust to spread throughout the house and settle on all surfaces. There is usually so much dust in the air that it looks like yellow fog. It is quite choking and the men have to wear dust masks and respirators. It gets in the hair, lungs, ears, and can even burn the eyes. Wood dust is cancer causing.
With this inadequate method rooms need to be sealed off with plastic. Furniture and drapes, etc. need to be covered. Even so, the walls, ceiling and all horizontal surfaces such as shelves become saturated with dust and a massive cleanup afterwards is necessary. But not all the dust gets cleaned up. Dust remains on the walls and ceiling, even though you don't notice it. Dust is discovered in nooks and crannies months after the job is complete.
With my Dust-Free system all that is eliminated. Ninety-nine point nine percent of the dust never makes it into the air. My guys don't need dust masks and nothing needs to be sealed off with plastic or covered. You can live in the house while we are working without worrying about dust.
Unfortunately Dust-Free refinishing hasn't caught on. Most floor men are so used to working in dust that they become accustomed to it. They'll argue that its not that dusty. Then they go home at night and take a shower and watch the water turn brown as the dust is washed out of their hair. I used to do that.
I couldn't go back to the old way. The difference in the working environment is like day and night. The customers love it too.
