Because Meghan and I own two huskies, I guess it was inevitable that we would have to see Eight Below. The film is the story of a team of sled dogs stationed at a research station in Antarctica who, because of an early storm that hits just as the researchers are about to leave for the season, are left behind to fend for themselves during the Antarctic winter. Based on a true story, the film documents the efforts of the dogs' caretaker, researcher Jerry Shepard (Walker) to return to the research site and rescue the dogs--or at least determine their fate--after being alone for over 100 days.

After the initial scenes at the research station, the film switches focus between Shepard and the other characters back in the US and the dogs in Antarctica. The dog scenes bring to mind the classic Disney live action films of the 60s and 70s. Through clever photography, music, and no small amount of training, the dogs are all imbued with individual personalities that make them true characters in the film. If you're familiar with Disney movies of this sort--or if you are familiar with the story upon which this is based--it's no surprise that not all of the dogs survive. As devoted dog owners, Meghan and I both found it very tough to watch the dogs suffer and die. I don't mind telling you I got really choked up about it. I guess that's a testament to the emotional impact of the film. But it is also a good thing to remember if you take your kids to see it. It could be somewhat upsetting to them.

Of course, without giving too much away, the film is very Disney in a lot of other ways, too, so that makes it a little predictable. There is also some sketchy CG work in the movie--I guess I wouldn't want to be around a real leopard seal (a nasty, and HUGE predator) either--which also detracts from the experience a bit. But, overall, the film is well made and worth seeing. And it has certainly convinced me that I don't want to even visit Antarctica. No way, no how.

Bottom line: In some ways, a typical Disney live action film, but still an enjoyable (if emotional) experience.
