Back in 1992, when Meghan
and I went on our honeymoon in Freeport, Bahamas, we were planning to go snorkeling.
When we got there, however, we found out about something called a "resort
scuba course". For less than $100 apiece, we got a half-day lesson in all
of the basics of scuba and an afternoon supervised dive. When we came up from
the dive, we knew that snorkeling was never going to be nearly as much fun as
actually being underwater. We were hooked. We decided then and there that we
would have to become certified divers.
Well, it took the better
part of eight years, but we finally got certified in Spring, 2000. Now, we dive
whenever we get a chance.
I've added this page
to the site so I can give you some kind of feel for why the sport of scuba diving
is so cool. All of the dive pictures on this site were taken by me (or, in the
case of the Manta Ray in Hawaii, by Meghan) using a Sealife Reefmaster camera
with a built-in flash.

Hawaii
- When diving on the Big Island,
I recommend Eco-Adventures.
They're the best folks you'd ever want to dive with.
- On Kauai, we dove with Bubbles
Below. They've got kind of a small boat, but the crew and dive masters
are very cool and very knowledgeable.
Bonaire
- Just about every hotel has its
own dive shop on Bonaire. Ours was Dive
Bonaire at the Divi
Flamingo resort. Great crews and dive masters.
- Shore diving is the best part
of the experience on Bonaire. Check out the Bonaire tourism site for information
on the Bonaire Marine Park, dive site locations, and lots of other info on
Bonaire.
North
Carolina
- On our one trip to the NC coast,
we dove with Olympus
Diving. They have been rated as the best east coast diving operation by
Rodales.
- For more information on wreck
diving in North Carolina, check out the North
Carolina Wreck Diving page.
Dive
Equipment
- If you're buying your own equipment,
you can save a lot of money if you buy online. The best two online scuba equipment
sites that I've found are Diver's
Discount Supply and Divers
Direct. Between them, you should be able to find anything you need.
