Wingate indicates V3.0.0.1 released May 5 fixes this problem. The initial release of Wingate 3.0 has a problem with random freezes of the Wimgate server. When this occurs, the ISP cannot be accessed from the client or server machines and timeout errors occur. When the Wingate Gatekeeper is also open and displayed, the first failed operation is displayed in the activity panel. The workaround is to stop, then restart the Wingate Engine. We have been able to occasionally, not consistently, reproduce a freeze failure mode by:
The occurrence rate on our installation has been tolerable at once or several times per day. This is a known problem at Wingate. Other freeze-type failures, not related to this particular failure mode, may or may not respond to this workaround. A. Should Wingate retain my old settings when I upgrade? Yes. Deerfield acknowledges this doesn't always happen and is looking into the issue. (Dec 28, 1998). A. How do I backup my old settings before upgrading.? See Wingate Knowledge Article #1006. A. How does NetMeeting work with Wingate? Wingate Technical Service notes: "To a certain extent Wingate 3.0 works with NetMeeting. When using the Wingate Internet client you can make an outgoing call from ONE workstation at a time (regardless of license size.) You will not be able to receive incoming calls. This is due to the way NetMeeting uses its ports. It was not designed to connect through a proxy server and will not connect through any proxy server except an H323 proxy, which Wingate is not. Ms needs to modify NetMeeting in order to get this to work correctly. We are working with them on this." A. Where is the client for a Windows NT4 machine? To use Wingate 3 from a Windows NT4 client, set up applications in the same manner as for previous Wingate versions. At this time there is no client available for WinNT. The reason for this is that, until Service Pack 4, WinNT4 did not have a complete implementation of Winsock 2. Now that SP4 for WinNT4 has been released, the Wingate developers are working on an NT client application and plan on releasing it in the first quarter of 99. Until that time, you can still configure your NT client machines to use the same basic proxy services that were available in Wingate2.x. You will have to use either the standard or pro version of Wingate to do this though. A. Can I use 2 modems concurrently on Wingate? Wingate 3.x can rotate connections out across multiple modems, or if they are already connected and combining bandwidth, Wingate will use it. Wingate 3.x can't dial two modems and combine the bandwidth, but it will use it once the connection is already established. A. Where can I find Help for Application Setup for Wingate Server? Help from Wingate users is often found at the Wingate forums. The Wingate Help file, accessed with the Gatekeeper, has help on many applications, including:
