Under the category of "what were you thinking?" should be this excerpt from Ann Mudel's e-mail distribution from Saturday 5/22:

Save Our Great Lakes Water
Buy only the bottled water which comes from a state not bordering the Great Lakes. If all of us Great Lakes residents did this we could compensate for the loss of our water taken by Ice Mountain and other firms. You will frequently find that the non-Great Lakes bottled water has a lower price also. The last water I bought on sale was from Georgia.

Is there another group in Georgia who is going to protect their water from the Great Lake states? Are they proposing that the residents of Georgia only drink water from Michigan?

Do the MCWC people really care about the water or are they just trying to stop Ice Mountain from doing business in Michigan and providing jobs for the surrounding area?

It sure does seem that recently more water has replaced whatever has been taken by Ice Mountain. Of course there are other users of the same water Ice Mountain is using; the local farmers, the golf courses, the residents, Canadian Lakes' artificially maintained lakes, the Tri-Lakes (there is a dam to maintain their water levels) and the local businesses.

How much pollution is created by trucking water from Georgia to Michigan?

The bottom line is - support local industry that cleanly utilizes local renewable resources! You can recycle the water taken from Michigan sources by Ice Mountain every time you flush!

From the posting I requested on Ann Mudel's e-mail distribution on Wednesday 5/26:

More Comments on Bottled Water (And Last)
From Ron Emerson
Do not be fooled into thinking that taking water from another state is better than drinking the local water. If you don't believe in bottled water, why would you want to take it from Georgia or any other state? Do they have an overflow or overabundance of water that is destroying their land? I don't think so. You must remember that since the beginning of civilization, the diversion of water for human consumption has been a vital part of the development of the civilization. So if the advice is to take bottled water from another state; don't you think someone in Georgia might be thinking - heah, they have any awful lot of fresh water in the Great Lakes! The reason water bottlers like Ice Mountain prefer to have "local sources" is to keep the costs down; it costs money to move the water from point A to point B. If you want to keep water in Michigan, buy water from Michigan and replace it every time you flush!

If you have any questions, send me an e-mail and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.
