A study of the word Hell

The word Hell is mentioned in the Bible many times. But the word Hell, when one looks at the underlying Hebrew or Greek text, can have an altogether different meaning than what we have  traditionally  been taught all of our lives.

The traditional teaching of the word 'Hell' carries with it the sense of everlasting damnation and separation from God and yet we find usages of the word Hell wherein the traditional meaning of everlasting damnation does not fit the context.

Below you will find all of the verses in the Bible {KJV} that contains the use of the word Hell, with the exception of those verses in the four Gospels that are repetitious. Inserted into the verse you will find in parenthesis the person or nation about whom the verse was written and the underlying Hebrew or Greek word, translated as Hell in the {KJV}.

I think you will be surprised at how general a term the word Hell really is by the time you are through with this study.

For instance, Hell in the Old Testament, is translated from the Hebrew word {sheol} but in the New Testament, is translated from the Greek words {Hades}, {Tartaroo or Tartaros} and {Geenna} . {KJV}.

In the New Testament {Hades} and {Tartaroo or Tartaros} seems to be differentiated from {Geenna} in that {Hades} and {Tartaroo or Tartaros} alludes to being more permanent or everlasting places of torment than {Geenna}.

{Hades} is used in referring to the unsaved {permanent/everlasting} and {Tartaroo or Tartaros} is used in reference to the fallen angels, {permanent/everlasting} and {Geenna} is used in referring to the saved but unfaithful children of God with a duration of time {limited to one age or 1000 years} the underlying Greek word being {Aion} in the singular.

An interesting side study is the use of the words ("for ever."), in the New Testament, in reference to One day as a thousand years or 1000 years as one day, found in [2 Peter 3:8] and [Psalms 90:4].

The idea being that the 1000 year reign of Christ { one day, also known as the Lord's Day} is the next age {singular} to come. The unfaithful, apostate Christians of the Church dispensation will be excluded from going into, and ruling, as Kings and Priests with Christ, in the Kingdom of Heaven, for the duration of 1000 years [Revelation 20:4-5].

Even though they have the gift of everlasting life, in eternity future, that can come to pass only after the 1000 year age to come has been fulfilled. Why? Because apostate Christians will lose their reward of inheriting, with Christ, His inheritance of the Kingdom of Heaven; which has a duration of 1000 years [1 Corinthians 3:11-16] [Revelation 20:4-5].  After that 1000 years, the Heavens and Earth of old pass away and a New Heaven and Earth are created. [2 Peter 3:10-11] [Revelation 20:11]

Let us continue.

{Tartaroo or Tartaros} is used only in reference to the fallen angels "which rebelled against God {" kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation,"} and is described in {Strong's reference} as (the deepest abyss of Hell or {Hades}).

There does not seem to be any kind of Hebrew word differentiation found in the usage of the word Hell {sheol} in the Old Testament as is found in the New Testament. Any differentiation found, in the New Testament, will come at a close study of the context of any verses which contain a reference to Hell.

Why would that be? Because, in the Old Testament, all of the dead went to one great chamber {sheol} which held, both, paradise or also called Abraham's bosom (the place that held the righteous dead) and {Hades} (the place that held the unrighteous dead). Between these two chambers there was a great gulf fixed which prevented anyone from passing back and forth between the two chambers. [Luke 16:22-31] However, when Christ arose from the grave he took paradise and those in paradise with Him into the Third Heaven, [Ephesians 4:8-10],  leaving {Hades} and {Tartaroo or Tartaros} in that greater chamber called Hell or {sheol}

Is it not written that Hell is enlarged as the proud man who cannot be satisfied but allows his desires to become greater and greater until his doom is visited upon him? Is it not written: "Woe to him that buildeth a town with blood, and stablisheth a city by iniquity!"?

The Old Testament

The following verses are posted here with a brief statement upon the meaning of each.

[Deuteronomy 32:22] For a fire is kindled in mine anger {against Israel}, and shall burn unto the lowest hell {sheol}, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains.

The lowest hell is referred to in the New Testament as Tartaros. It has been reserved for the fallen Angels who left their first estate and took the daughters of men as wives and procreated with them and in doing so, the result was the birth of children who became the giants of old. These offspring were abominations in the eyes of God. They were destroyed from the face of the Earth partially by the Noahic Flood but their total demise came by the sword of the Israelites during the reign of King David. The foundations of the mountains can be considered to be the ceiling of Sheol. Hence, the foundations of the mountains are set on fire by hell fire.

[2 Samuel 22:6] The sorrows of hell {sheol} compassed me {Christ} about; the snares of death prevented me; See [Psalms 16:10] below as well.

A prophetic utterance. Jesus is the Holy One that took on the sin of the whole world and paid the price of commending His Spirit to the Father. The soul of Jesus then descended into Tartaros where he preached to the spirits {fallen Angels}, but God the Father did not leave Jesus there. As we all know Jesus Christ was the first fruit of those who will be resurrected from among the second dead and sits now at the right hand of the Father.

[Job 11:1] Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said, to Job [Job 11:8] It {speaking of God's wisdom} is as high as heaven; what canst thou do ? deeper than hell; {sheol} what canst thou know ?

[Job 26:1] But Job answered and said, [Job 26:6] Hell {sheol} is naked before him, and destruction hath no covering.

These are references to the omnipotent and omnipresent characteristics of our three times Holy God. All of creation is open to examination by the most high God.

[Psalms 9:17] The wicked shall be turned into hell, {sheol} and all the nations that forget God.

A prophetic utterance made hundreds of years before the Apostle Paul wrote [1 Corinthians 15] or John the Revelator wrote [Revelation 20] and the "wicked" referred to here is a reference to saved apostate Preachers/teachers just as much as it is a reference to the unsaved.

[Psalms 16:10] For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell {sheol} { referring to Jesus, the Christ};  neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One {Christ Jesus} to see corruption.

[Psalms 18:5] The sorrows of hell {sheol} compassed me {David} about: the snares of death prevented me.

Again, a prophetic utterance.

The following New Testament verses refer to [2 Samuel 22:6], [Psalms 16:10] and [Psalms 18:5]

[Acts 2:27] Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, {Hades} neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

[Acts 2:31] He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, {Hades} neither his flesh did see corruption.

[Psalms 55:15] Let death seize upon them, {the wicked} and let them go down quick into hell: {sheol} for wickedness is in their dwellings, and among them.

This is a prayer of King David. Notice that David has no qualms about praying that former acquaintances of his, people who had took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company with, former friends be delivered quickly into hell. Why? For wickedness is in their dwellings, and among them.

Was it not the Apostle Paul that advised that if a member of the Church will not repent of their wicked ways then the whole Church should expel them from their midst and pray that they be delivered unto "Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus"? This would mean that their soul would not be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. For more study concerning the spirit body and the soul body please read: The Bodies of Spirit and Soul.

[Psalms 86:13] For great is thy mercy toward me {David}: and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell. {sheol}

This is a prayer of King David and there are prophetic utterances in this Psalm as well.

[Psalm 88] Will be interesting reading at this point since it is the testimony of one of God's children that has uttered the words in this Psalm. Notice that the first verse has this testimony: "O LORD God of my salvation", ........

[Psalms 116:3] The sorrows of death compassed me {the child of the Lord}, and the pains of hell {sheol} gat hold upon me: I found trouble and sorrow.

A Psalm from one of the saved but backslidden children of God who has returned to the fold. Jonah could very well have prayed a prayer like this.

[Psalms 139:8] If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, {sheol} behold, thou art there.

King David wrote this Psalm in total awe of our most high God.

[Proverbs 5:5] Her {a strange woman} feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell. {sheol}

An admonishment for all who would take heed to the Word of God to flee from the presence of the ungodly women, undoubtedly a harlot, described in this Psalm.

[Proverbs 7:27] Her {a harlots} house is the way to hell, {sheol} going down to the chambers of death.

Notice the description of the abode of death. Notice that the word chambers is plural. As stated before, during the period of time prior to the resurrection of Christ Jesus the chambers of death were Paradise, Hades, and Tartarus.

[Proverbs 9:18] But he {the simple man} knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her {A foolish woman's} guests are in the depths of hell. {sheol}

[Proverbs 15:11] Hell {sheol} and destruction are before the LORD: how much more then the hearts of the children of men?

The word "hearts" used in this context is a metaphor for the 'soul'. This verse could just as well have been written as follows: Hell {sheol} and destruction are before the LORD: how much more then the souls of the children of men.

[Proverbs 15:24] The way of life is above to the wise, that he may depart from hell {sheol} beneath.

The way of life or "the way" is a reference to 'the kingdom life' that is to come when the Messiah shall rule and reign over the Earth for one thousand years. The writer of this proverb knows that generally there is a heaven to gain and a hell to shun but the context surrounding "the wise" moves this statement from the realm of eternity to the realm of a single age of 1000 years in which Christ will reign as the Lord of Lords and the King of Kings from the heavenlies over the Earth, through Israel. The overcomers of the Church dispensation will rule at His side for it is their inheritance with Christ, the last Adam.

Paul said it like this: Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought: But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: [1 Corinthians 2:6-7]

[Proverbs 23:14] Thou shalt beat him {the child} with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell. {sheol}

This verse speaks of obedience. Our propensity to obey the precepts, the laws, the rules is not a voluntary, and natural thing. An obedient soul is only made perfect or mature through suffering the rod of affliction.

[Proverbs 27:20] Hell {sheol} and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied.

Here the "eyes" are used as a metaphor in describing the lust of the 'soul' through the eyes of the flesh.

James, the half brother of Jesus, would say it like this: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. [James 1:14-15]

[Isaiah 5:14] Therefore hell {sheol} hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure: and their { Judah's} glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it.

Remember Korah? Please read the Psalm of the son's of Korah [the  88th Psalm] to gain more insight to this verse. Please remember that Korah and his family were saved before the Earth swallowed them up.

The next two verses concern Satan's future.

[Isaiah 14:9] Hell {sheol} from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee {Satan} at thy coming: it stirreth up the dead for thee, even all the chief ones of the earth; it {Hell} hath raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations.

[Isaiah 14:15] Yet thou {Satan} shalt be brought down to hell, {sheol} to the sides of the pit.

And lo and behold we find these verses in [Revelation chapter 20]: And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.

[Isaiah 57:9] And thou {the wicked} wentest to the king with ointment, and didst increase thy perfumes, and didst send thy messengers far off, and didst debase thyself even unto hell. {sheol}

The wicked in this verse would be the nation of Israel referring to her whoredoms.

[Ezekiel 31:16] I made the nations to shake at the sound of his {the Assyrian, Pharaoh king of Egypt}  fall, when I cast him down to hell {sheol} with them that descend into the pit: and all the trees {nations} of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, shall be comforted in the nether parts of the earth.

Eden was a Gershonite Levite, son of Joah in the days of king Hezekiah of Judah. The reference to trees would have to be a reference to his family tree or his descendants.

[Ezekiel 31:17] They {the confederates of Egypt} also went down into hell {sheol} with him unto them that be slain with the sword; and they that were his arm, that dwelt under his shadow in the midst of the heathen.

[Ezekiel 32:21] The strong among the mighty shall speak to him {Pharaoh king of Egypt} out of the midst of hell {sheol} with them that help him: they are gone down, they lie uncircumcised, slain by the sword.

[Ezekiel 32:27] And they { Meshech, Tubal, and all her multitude} shall not lie with the mighty that are fallen of the uncircumcised, which are gone down to hell {sheol} with their weapons of war: and they have laid their swords under their heads, but their iniquities shall be upon their bones, though they were the terror of the mighty in the land of the living.

The Book of Genesis (chap. 10) gives us the descendants of Noah's three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. We are told that the sons of Japheth are Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras. source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tubal

[Amos 9:2] Though they {my people of Israel} dig into hell, {sheol} thence shall mine hand take them; though they climb up to heaven, thence will I bring them down

God's promise to Israel for her whoredoms. There is nowhere that Israel can hide from the wrath of Almighty God.

[Jonah 2:2] And {Jonah} said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell {sheol} cried I, and thou heardest my voice.

Did you know that Noah died and went to hell when that great fish swallowed him whole? Did Christ not also descend into hell to preach to the Spirits of the fallen Angels and to take the righteous dead, residing in Paradise at the time, into third heaven when he arose from the grave?

[Habakkuk 2:5] Yea also, because he {that increaseth that which is not his} transgresseth by wine, he is a proud man, neither keepeth at home, who enlargeth his desire as hell, {sheol} and is as death, and cannot be satisfied, but gathereth unto him all nations, and heapeth unto him all people:

In another place the Psalmist says: Whoso privily slandereth his neighbour, him will I cut off: him that hath an high look and a proud heart will not I suffer.

The New Testament

[Matthew 5:22] But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell {Geenna} fire.

[Matthew 5:29] And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. {Geenna}

[Matthew 5:30] And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. {Geenna}

So we see right away that just because one is saved does not mean that the fires of hell won't be use to chastise the Christian for the duration of 1000 years. Jesus was speaking to His disciples {the saved} at this particular time while the multitude was further down on the mountainside.

Geenna was originally the valley of Hinnom, south of Jerusalem, where the filth and dead animals of the city were cast out and burned; a fit symbol of the unfaithful and their future destruction. It was outside the city and therefore a place of dishonor. Those to whom this verse is directed are the children of God.

[Matthew 10:28] And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. {Geenna}

Destruction of the Soul is a reference to the second death. For a more in depth study on the second death please read: The Mystery of the Second Death  Notice also that this verse is referring to the saved. The spirit body is not destroyed by the second death. Rather is is only separated from the Soul and the physical bodies for the duration of 1000 years. [Hebrews 4:12] [Revelation 20:6]

[Matthew 11:23] And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: {Hades} for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.

Thus we see that those whom rejected Christ in Capernaum are already suffering the same everlasting fate as those of Sodom and Gomorrah. Notice that the Greek text says "Hades". Only the unsaved go to Hades after they die.

[Matthew 16:18] And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell {Hades} shall not prevail against it.

This is the promise of Christ that the kingdom of Satan would not prevail against the kingdom of Jesus, the Christ.

[Matthew 18:9] And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell {Geenna} fire.

What is interesting about this verse is the previous verse.
[18:8] Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life {'Zoe', meaning everlasting life} halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.
Verse 8 is not saying that if a believer is cast into everlasting fire that they will remain there for ever and ever ages without end. The verse is just saying that they will be cast into a fire that is, in it's-self, everlasting. According to the Greek texts, verse 9 is referring to {Geenna} fire and Geenna is reserved for the saved not the unsaved. The length of time that the saved but apostate believer is held by the second death in Geenna is 1000 years. [Revelation 20:6]

Let us continue.

{Matthew 23:15} Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell {Geenna} than yourselves.

And the same grave error is being committed by the Laodicean Church and their congregations of today.

[Matthew 23:33] Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell? {Geenna}

Again, this admonition could just as well have been addressed to the Laodicean Church and it's preachers of today.

[Luke 12:5] But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; {Geenna} yea, I say unto you, Fear him.

Again, Christ is speaking of the saved and yet apostate believer. Revelation 20:6

[Luke 16:23] And in hell {Hades} he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

The rich man was not saved having lived his entire life in unbelief.

[Acts 2:27] Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, {Hades} neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. [2 Samuel 22:6], [Psalms 16:10] and [Psalms 18:5

Again, a reference to the descending of Christ into Tartarus, which is the deepest pit in Hades, to preach to the fallen Angels and the ultimate resurrection of Christ before His body could decompose, three days and nights later.

[Acts 2:31] He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, {Hades} neither his flesh did see corruption. [2 Samuel 22:6], [Psalms 16:10] and [Psalms 18:5]

Again, a reference to the resurrection of Christ.

[James 3:6] And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. {Geenna}

James is speaking to believers and of the saved and yet apostate believer in particular

[2 Peter 2:4] For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell{Tartaroo or Tartaros} and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; [Jude 1:6] And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

2 Peter Chapter 2 and Jude are sister Chapters and are addressing the subject of unfaithful, apostate, Christian false teachers. Their destiny is 1000 years of blackness of darkness and being held in that state for the purpose of being reserved unto "the judgment of the great day" at the Great White Throne.

One might say: But we have been taught all of our lives that believers will not be judged at the Great White Throne! To which the answer must be that we live in an the season of the Church dispensation wherein false teachers and Preachers of unsound doctrines abound. Did Christ not say to the Churches of this season Because thou sayest *, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.

Did Martha not say to Jesus concerning Lazarus: "I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day." [John 11:24] She was speaking of the resurrection we find in [Revelation 20:12].  Please note that judgment begins with those of the house of God.

And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

Our scriptures never uses the term "small and great" in reference to the unsaved but rather always uses the term in reference to the saved.

The word "stand" is a reference to the resurrection to which Martha alludes. It is the act of standing up from a state of being dead. In this case it is a reference of being resurrected from the second death after having been reserved unto the last day of judgment at the great white throne.

Martha could not possibly know if Lazarus was going to be one of those believers that would rule and reign with Christ during the 1000 years prior to the Great White Throne judgment, but she did know that Lazarus was saved and that meant that Lazarus would ultimately be resurrected at the last day of judgment and that it would be determined there that his name was in the Book of Life. Had our Lord Jesus not said as much? Let's take a look.

John 6:39, 40, 44, 54 And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing * *, but should raise it up again at the last day.

And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.

There is more to be said concerning the last day if you wish to read The Second Resurrection.

Let us continue.

[Revelation 1:18] I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell {Hades} and of death.

Praise God!!! How did Jesus gain possession of the keys of Hades and Death but that His soul went into the pit of Hades after He died and pried them from the cold dark fingers of them that had them in their possession at that time? Praise God!!!

[Revelation 6:8] And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell {Hades}  followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.

But death and hell will find their everlasting destination to be the Lake of Fire very shortly

[Revelation 20:13] And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell {Hades} delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

The dead who are delivered up for judgment here are the unsaved and their destination is the everlasting lake of fire. This is everlasting second death and there will be no escaping from there.

[Revelation 20:14] And death and hell {Hades} were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

The latter half of 1 Corinthians 15 and Revelation 20 are sister verses. It is in these wonderful verses that we find the last two awful enemies of God and man destroyed and done away with.

Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all * * sleep, but we shall all be changed

The term "sleep" is used many times in the Scriptures in reference to death. In this context it is a reference to the second death, Hence, this verse could be translated as the following.

Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all be held by the second death but we shall all be changed

Only not all at the same time. Some Christians will be changed at the out-resurrection from among the second dead see The Mystery of the Second Death  for a greater understanding of the second death and it's ramifications. And some Christians will be changed at the last trump and the last day.

In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed

There is more to be said concerning the last trump. Please read The Second Resurrection.

For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.

O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?

As always, it is my hope that this study has been of some help to you as you seek to know our Lord and Saviour in a more intimate way.
