Cutting out objects will be one of the most basic tricks you'll learn on your way to becoming a graphic artist.Below are SOME of the possibilities with this technique. This tutorial is strict to Paint Shop Pro5,it has no add on plugins and hopefully will show you the true scope of Paint Shop Pro alone with no additions. E-mail me if you have any questions.

Step1:

Figure 1 Create a New File, when prompted set the size for about:
  • 250pixels by 120pixels
  • 40 to 50-DPI or Resolution
  • 16.7 million Colors
  • White Background Color

Step2:

Figure 2 Hit your Selection Tool in your Tool Bar
Make sure your Control Palette is up
Now what we're going to do is Drag off individual shapes (the ones in the Selection Type Box of your Control Palette see Figure2)that overlap each other, and will merge as one Complex Selection.
Select the Rectangle to Start ,,Drag a Rectangle Shape in the Canvas Area.
Now Select the Circle ,,Hold Down the "Shift Key to add to a selection and the Ctrl Key to take away from a selection", and Drag a Circle in the Canvas,Let go of the Mouse button first.
Now Select a Square ,,Do as above Hold Down the Shift Key ,,Drag off the square.Do the same with the Ctrl Key to remove shapes from your selection.

Step3:

Figure 3 Now at this point you should have a selection that might "probably not, hehe" look somthing like this.As you can see it has many shapes merged to one single Complex Shape. You can make this Shape as Complex as you want.(NO LIMITS)
Step4 :

Figure 4 Select the Color you wish the shape to be.Flood Fill inside the Selection using the Paint Bucket.
Hit ,,Image ,,Effects ,,Cutout ,,Set it to Cutout ,,Black ,, -1 Vertical ,,+2Horizontal ,,Blur 3 or so.
Do this Cutout again but Make White your Cutout Color, and Invert your Cutout to ,,+1 Vertical ,,-2 Horizontal.
Apply a Drop Shadow making the Opacity Somthing less than the Cutout approximately 70%.
