Erlenbach, Russia

A German/Russian Village  of the Volga River Area

History & Location

According to the Journal of the AHSGR, Vol. 6, No. 2, Summer 1983, from a translation of a Russian article of 1890:  “The settlement of Erlenbach is located on the left bank of Mokraia Ol'khovka creek.  In 1828 a merchant by the name of Remennikov founded a khutor on this site.  Soon afterwards several colonists from various counties of the Kamyshin district also settled here to grow grain.  This khutor was called Remennikov Khutor, which has been its popular name up to the present time.  The settlement received its official name of Erlenbach (Alder Creek) in 1852, when other colonists from the Kamyshin district settled here.”

The following information is from a translation of the same Russian article of 1890 by Hilda (Gillig) Weber & her late husband Raymond Weber:  The Parish Rosenberg, with clerical headquarters in the colony of the same name, is situated in the county Kamischin, Government Saratov.  This parish was established in 1859 from the already settled colonies of  Rosenberg, Erlenbach (aka Remennaya), New-Norka, Oberdorf (aka Kupzowo & Beckers Chutor), Unterdorf & Alexandertal (aka New-Schosnowka), which had been resettled during 1850-1853.  By 1858 Rosenberg already had one church built of wood with a seating capacity of 500. In 1871 Oberdorf & Erlenbach built their own wooden churches with seating for 600 & 500 respectively.  In 1904 Rosenberg Parish had 10,306 people of German nationality enrolled, of which only 6,376 were residents in the Parish.  Erlenbach’s members numbered 1,320; Unterdorf had 837; Oberdorf 1,528.

The Mother Colonies of Erlenbach are:  Dobrinka, Franzosen, Galka, Grimm, Holstein, Schwab, Shcherbakovka and Stephen
