VCD and SVCD to DVD

Applications Needed:

1.    VCDToolsX

2.    FFMPEGX ($$)

3.    Sizzle 0.5

4.    Toast Titanium 6.0 ($$)

NOTE: This procedure works for BOTH VCD and SVCD.  The difference is VCD will yield .m1v (mpeg1 files) whereas SVCD will yield .m2v (mpeg2 files).   The resulting DVD does not work in all DVD players, however most of the new ones these days will play them.  I suggest using a DVD-RW for the first burn to see if your player will play the disk or not.

Step 1: Converting VCD/SVCD Disc to Disc-Images

If your VCD/SVCD is contained on a disc (Cdr) you will have to image them to your hard drive before you can continue.

  1. Place Disk in Computer
  2. Open Toast 6.0
  3. Choose COPY and set READ FROM to be the drive you have the disk in
  4. Go to FILE and choose SAVE AS DISK IMGAE.  Save as Movie1.toast
  5. Repeat for each disk until you have all the disks imaged on your HD and have Movie1.toast, Movie2.toast and so on
  6. Rename all the files to .bin

Step 2: Extracting Video Files From VCD/SVCD Images

If your VCD/SVCD is contained in a disc image (.bin) continue as follows

  1. Open VCDToolsX
  2. Choose the 1st button (vcdXrip)
  3. From the window that opens up, click BIN FILE and locate the 1st .bin file for the VCD/SVCD files you made above.
  4. Click SAVE TO and set your destination
  5. Click Start.  This will rip the .mpeg file from that particular image to your HD.  Locate the file and rename it to PART1.mpeg
  6. Repeat for each .bin file until you have PART1.mpeg, PART2.mpeg and so on.

Step 3. Change AUDIO to 48Khz (optional)

This is where part of the player compatibility comes into effect.  VCD/SVCD usually contain their audio as 44Khz mp2 files.  Traditional DVD spec is 48Khz @ 224kb/s and can be mp2 files.  You should convert the audio file to DVD spec as described below.   !!HOWEVER!! some standalone players (like mine for example) can play DVDŐs with 44Khz audio and this step does not need to be done.  ItŐs up to you to decide if you want to do thisÉ or if you want to skip it, use DVD-RW and see if it works or not.  If the disk doesnŐt play you will then most likely have to do this step

1.     Open FFMPEGX

2.     Locate the PART1.mpeg file by clicking OPEN and selecting PART1.mpeg

3.     Set the VIDEO CODEC to Passthrough (ffmpeg)

4.     Unclick ENCODE VIDEO from the as seen next to the VIDEO CODEC pull down menu.

5.     Click on the AUDIO tab

6.     Change the AUDIO CODEC to .MP2

7.     Set AUDIO BITRATE to 224 kb/s

8.     Set SAMPELING to 48000 hz

9.     Ensure ENCODE AUDIO is checked

10. Set your save location and save the file as PART1_48KHZ.mp2

11. Click ENCODE

12. Repeat for each PARTx.mpeg file you have from above steps

These audio files are now DVD spec and will be used in later steps

Step 4. Demux Each Of Your .mpeg Files

Because the PartX.mpeg files you saved above have the incorrect audio specs we need to demux them so we can remux with the proper audio spec file (the ones made by Step 3).    This step also needs to be done even if you decided to skip Step 3!

1.     From FFMPEGX, click on TOOLS.

2.     Under VIDEO TOOLS there are two BROWSE buttons.  Use the 1st to browse for Part1.mpeg

3.     Once it is selected, click the DEMUX button (grey button, below AUTHOR) do not click ENCODE

4.     This will demux your mpeg file into 2 files which are automatically saved at the same location of the Part1.mpeg

5.     Locate the file called Part1(some numbers).m2v   *will be .m1v in case of VCD  Rename to just Part1.m2v

6.     Locate the file called Part1(some numbers).m1a and throw it away (unless you skipped step 3.  in this case this is your audio file.  Rename it to .mp2)

7.     Repeat for each of the PartX.mpeg files you have

Summary Thus Far:

You now should have the following files

Part1.m2v    ---   Part1_48khz.mp2

Part2.m2v    ---   Part2_48khz.mp2

Part3.m2v    ---   Part3_48khz.mp2

And so on for however many discs or image files you had

Step 5. Build A DVD Image Using Sizzle

  1. Open Sizzle
  2. You Will start with the Table Of Contents Screen. This will be the screen that appears as soon as the DVD loads.  ItŐs a little different than Commercial DVDŐs.  It more resembles Episode DVDŐs if you are familiar with them.  This is the ROOT menu, buttons from here will bring you to MenuŐs where you can affect playback
  3. If you want to add a picture to this portion of the DVD just drag the image to the Boxed area that says DROP MENU BACKGROUND IMAGE
  4. If you want audio to play during the presentation of this TOC menu, drop the audio file to the box that says DROP MENU BACKGROUND AUDIO (has to be .ac3 audio files)
  5. Click ADD TITLE (far left of window) and choose the PART1.m2v file.  You may get a message saying this isnŐt dvd spec but just push OK. The added movie file now shows up in the ITEM listing on the bottom right of the window.
  6. Click once on TITLE 1 and then click the AUDIO tab
  7. Click the + button to choose the audio file for this particular Title.  The audio file you want to choose is PART1_48Khz.mp2)
  8. Click ADD TITLE to add the 2nd movie file (PART2.m2v) and repeat the process of adding audio for this title.
  9. Add each additional title (and its audio) as just done until you have them all added.
  10. Click on the TOC Menu 1 as seen in the ITEM listing on the bottom right.  You will see a button that says RESUME MOVIE. Click once to highlight, then click EDIT BUTTON
  11. Set the ACTION to JUMP TO TITLE and choose Title 1 from the pull down menu.   Rename the button to PLAY TITLE 1 and click OK
  12. Click ADD BUTTON and repeat the process for each TITLE you added, renaming to PLAY TITLE 2 and so on.
  13. NOW, click on TITLE 1 from the ITEM LISTING (you can also add pictures and audio to the menuŐs for each title if you like, as seen above)
  14. You will see a button there.  Edit that button setting AUCTION to JUMP TO CHAPTER, and choose the only option available from the pull down menu. Rename to PLAY and click OK
  15. Add a new button, edit it and set its action to JUMP TO TABLE OF CONTENTS MENU.  Rename to BACK TO TOC and click ok
  16. Repeat for each title
  17. Go to where it says DISC LABEL and set that to the name of your dvd.  Use ALL CAPITALS and _ for spaces.  Example: MY_DVD
  18. Click SAVE DISC IMAGE from the top right of the screen and set the save location to your desktop.  Name the disk image whatever you want.
  19. Once the demuxing/remixing/authoring is complete you will have a disk image on your desktop that represents your dvd.
  20. Mount the image, open DVD player and choose the VIDEO_TS folder from the image to play.   Ensure everything looks ok and that all the buttons work
  21. If you are satisfied, unmount the image

Step 6. Burn The Disc Image With Toast

  1. Drag the disk image to ToastŐs icon
  2. Everything will be automatically set ready for burning
  3. Click BURN
