Helping Schools Tags

This web page is part of a DECA service project.  DECA is an association of marketing education students.  The purpose of this project is to increase awareness and promote sales of the "helping schools" tags.  Look for our billboard on Centerpoint Parkway near the Cathedral of the Cross Church.  Thanks to Jim Mundy for his sponsorship of this billboard.  Thanks to local banks for providing candy for this display.  For more information about this project please call Robin Payant at Erwin High School at 379-3400.

What are
"Helping Schools" Tags?

"Helping Schools" tags are the product of a fourth grade class in Mobile's Leinkauf Elementary School.  These students approached the late state Senator Michael Figures about the idea to generate extra revenue for their schools and others.  Figures sponsored the legislation in 1990.  The familiar tag has been seen on more than 40,000 vehicles in Alabama.  Recently, the tag's look was revised.  The design was approved by the Alabama Legislative Oversite Committee for License Plates.

Where does the
money go?

Vehicle owners earmark the money to their local public school system.  $11.63 goes directly to the purchase of classroom supplies and equipment in local public schools.  Of the $15 fee, $3.37 is for processing and the tag's production.  The tags are available at the county license commissioner's office for the standard renewal/purchase fee plus an additional $15.  Since 1990, over $630,000 has been generated through this program.  Higher participation means motorists help their local school systems get extra money for their classrooms.  Many business owners equip all their corporate cars and fleets with the tags to show their support for their local schools.
