Come and Visit
Worcester's East Side!*
The East Side boasts Worcester's own Little
Italy on Shrewsbury Street, featuring over 30 family owned Italian restaurants,
bakeries, and specialty markets. Meet local politicians for breakfast at Scano's
Restaurant and eavesdrop on current, local political debates. Even President Clinton
stopped off at Scano's for a steak sandwich and cannoli on his visit to
Worcester. Be entertained by owner Bob Dagnello of the Wonder Bar as he plays
jazz and serves pizza on a Saturday night. Worcester is the diner capital of the
world and Shrewsbury Street is home to three gritty gems - Mac's, Boulevard and
Parkway. Savor a late night espresso and decadent dessert at Café Dolce.
* Like to hike? The three mile East Side trail, beginning
in Christoforo Columbo Park winds its way up hills, thr ough forest, past an
old quarry, blueberry bushes and meadows, ending at a stream at Greenhill Park. You
will find it hard to believe you are in the middle of the city! Visit the barnyard zoo
where children and adults can see pygmy goats, zebra and deer or view the garden plots
where local residents grow their own vegetables, herbs and flowers. Picnic by the
pond and playgrounds or try your hand at a round of golf at the public golf course.
Greenhill Park is the place to be for sledding in winter or fireworks on 4th of
July.
*Take a stroll through our residential neighborhoods.
The East Side is known for its triple decker residences that were home to many immigrants
- Italian, Swede, Lithuanian, Syrian - that came to Worcester at the turn-of-the-century
to work as laborers in Worcester's factories. If you listen closely, you can still
hear Italian spoken in the streets or in the stores of Shrewsbury Street. Residents
take pride in the neighborhood and are active in neighborhood associations to better the
community.
