How to Sharpen Snuffers
Most important part of getting your Snuffers to fly
true is having straight blades.
Before you start to sharpen them, check with your eye and then a straight edge
to see if the blade is straight!
#1 Is a piece of key stock 5/16 x 1.5", with a cut out of 1/16 x 1".
#2 Using a small pair of vice grips, squeeze the high side of the blade. This
will take some practice to learn.
#3 Check all three blades and compare thickness. If one is thicker, sharpen on
file, by pushing down on the thick side, then rotate and do the same to
the other side of the blade. Remember, you are trying to remove stock from just
one blade.
If the blade is obviously sharpened more on one side than other, just file on
the thin side. Keep checking the width of the blade. Try to keep the edge
in the center of the blade.
#4 Shows direction to push. Wear a leather glove! You can push down hard at first,
but finish softly. This is very important in getting sharp blades.
( not pushing to hard )
#5 After mounting and spinning true, you can pull the head across a small
steel. Back to Tip! then rotate, do not push down hard. Be gentle! and
rotate till you have done each side twice.
If you want to strop it on some leather, do so.
Tips for Tuning Your Snuffers
I prefer swaged or glue in 5-degree
adaptors. This way I control the alignment of the head.
I use a roller V block system to spin and align the head.
Hot glue, index and align the head. When you spin the shaft, there should be no
wobble.
Five of the six arrows group together, one flies low left, what do you do next?
Index the nock to the next feather. The point of impact will change! If not
close, rotate again.*
Still not close, remount and align again! Index the nock again and again.
If that doesn't work, check the blades for straightness, usually one of the
three will have a very slight bend or warp in it. Straighten it, I have a
small piece if steel with clearance cut in the center that spans over the
blade. I just give a little squeeze with the vice grips.
Use a black marker on the blades and sharpen till the black is removed, then
check alignment.
So what have we learned? Check the straightness of each blade, before you
sharpen them!
If this doesn't get the head grouping with the others, remount on a different
arrow!
Still doesn't work, get another head!
I usually start with the blades in line with the feathers, but it doesn't
seem to matter.
Advanced
Tuning...............................
If I have a head that won't group and have tried all the above, I get out the
dial indicator and check the alignment of the tip end of the ferrule.
Sometimes the point can be ground off center. I zero in the ferrule, and file
or grind the 'high' edges till the point is back on center.
* Rotating the nock to the next feather will work on all style arrows and
heads.
