This film is Mel's directing debut!  Its a wonderful film  that tells the story about a former teacher (Justin McCleod) who was disfigured in an automobile accident that forever changed his life.   He now lives alone as a recluse in a big house on an island off Maine and supports himself as a free-lance illustrator. To the island's residents he is a mystery and  rumors circulate about his past. Some say he killed his wife and others say it was a young boy. He did time in prison.    When a young island resident (Chuck Norstadt played by Nick Stahl) asks McCleod to tutor him for a prep school admissions test, greater suspicion and fear sets in among the town's residents.
