About Us

Slough's End Ranch was established in 1992 with the purchase of Sul Farrah, a beautiful, black Arabian stallion of 98% Crabbet breeding, descended from champions such as Raffles and the great reining champion, Fadjhur.  To cover the costs of keeping our own horses, we began to board horses for a few friends.  That enterprise grew as we became involved in activities such as 4-H and Team Penning and breeding, until, by 1994, we had outgrown the confines of the main section of the pioneer dairy farm we had purchased.    We remodeled the interior of the century old cedar barn, and later added a second barn, tore down and replaced the existing 40'x60' covered arena and replaced it with one that is 60' x 80'.   As we continued to grow, we added two round pens. Together with six acres of summer pasture and over five acres of winter pasture, we now had a horse operation that worked perfectly for our needs, and we expanded the available stall space from 6 to 26 stalls.

We made contacts with an excellent farrier, who made regular visits and returned as needed, and has since been replaced by his also excellent former apprentice, Russell Stout

We next made contact with our veterinarian, Dr. Lisa Cornell, who is on call and, if unavailable, is covered by her partner, Dr. Joe Snyder of Myrtle Point Animal Hospital.  Both have served us well throughout our association.

Lloyd, our trainer, has been professionally training for the past eight years, and is exceptionally talented.  We both believe in gentle, caring management of large animals, earning trust before asking for cooperation.  Lloyd is an expert with problems ranging from correcting bad habits to teaching new tricks, from treating routine minor injuries to nursing neglected animals back to health.  As a result, he has frequently been used in emergencies by the Coos County Sheriff's Office.  In that capacity, he has helped rescue mistreated and neglected animals and rescue those in unhappy predicaments like being stuck in mud or seriously injured in mishaps.

We feed good quality grass hay from the Willamette Valley and wet C.O.B., unless other feed is provided by the owner. We feed at the approximate same time twice daily, and leave leftover grass hay throughout the day, unless we have alternate instructions.  We prefer not to feed Alfalfa hay for safety reasons.   Animals may be turned out to pasture, into round pens, or the covered arena, depending upon the horse's compatibility with other horses, and upon the weather on any given day.  The horses are monitored 24-7 and owners are notified of signs of illness or injury immediately.  In an emergency, we will call the vet of your choice, or our own if you don't specify one.  Farrier and Vet expenses will be charged directly to you. Our first concern is for the well-being of horses in our care.

Short stays available; Coos County Fair/Rodeo riders welcome.

Standing At Stud

Our barns proudly offer three breeding stallions, Sul Farrah, Arabian descendant of Crabbet Farms champions; Ser Farrah Witez, sired by Sul Farrah, and Sundance, a Kiger stallion from the famed Steens Mountain, Oregon band of wild Buckskin horses.

Sul Farrah

Purchased in 1992, Sul Farrah is descended from the famous champion show Arabian, Raffles, and the champion reining horse, Fadjhur.

Ser Farrah Witez

Ser Farrah Witez, sired by Sul Farrah out of a granddaughter of the great stud, Witez II, a Polish stallion brought to the US by General McArthur, to save him from the Russian armies.  He is a

rich bay, nicknamed Socks for his flashy white feet.  Possessing his dam's substance and his sire's grace, he is valued most for his good disposition, his quirky sense of humor, and his beauty, but he is a fun, fast and responsive riding horse, as well.  Breeding fee is $450 this year.  Socks is five, and beginning to breed, so there are no progeny on the ground.  Socks is standing at stud for $650 this year, and we have a few bookings left.

Sundance

Captured in 1994, Sundance is a red dun, rather than a buckskin, as his mane and tail are white.  To date, all of his progeny have been buckskin colored and marked and have inherited his sunny disposition and beauty.

Kiger horses are famous for their even temperament and their versatility, making excellent stock and show horses.  Captured in 1995, Sundance was a two-year-old herd leader, and fought his captors violently.  Once in his new home, however, he responded quickly to loving care, and, except for his irritating gift for opening doors and gates, has been a good horse, easy to work with and willing to work.  So far, the same can be said for all his progeny.  Breed fee is $600 this year.
