How do I know it is abuse?

PHYSICAL ABUSE:

Unexplained bruises and welts:
On the face, lips, mouth, torso, back, buttocks, or thighs.

Unexplained burns:
Cigar, cigarette burns, immersion burns, electric burner makes, iron marks, rope burns.

Unexplained fractures:
Of the skill, nose, facial structures, or the rest of the body.

Unexplained laceration:
On any area of the body, head, or limbs.

SEXUAL ABUSE:

• Difficulty in walking
• Pain or itching in the genital area
• Bruise or bleeding in the external genitalia, vaginal or anal area
• Venereal disease
• Pregnancy


Also, look for emotional signals, such as:

• Depression
• Afraid of people or certain places
• Extreme changes in behavior
• Regression in behavior, like bedwetting or thumb sucking
• Recurrent nightmares or disturbed sleep patterns
• Unusual interest or knowledge of sexual matters or expressing inappropriate affection
• Overly compliant or overly disruptive behavior
