Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. - James 1:27
If you know of someone in need who is fatherless or a widow in the northwest Houston area, please have their pastor contact us that we may serve them in their affliction. We will build the needed items, at our cost of materials + $7/hour shop rate. (Our normal shop rate ranges from $45 to $95/hour, in addition to the standard mark-up for materials.)
- Bunk Beds
-
For the fatherless, we will build a set of bunk bed frames, or other needed items. These are the same (actually better) sturdy, solid wood bed frames that our children use.
- Wheelchair Ramp
-
Many widows are elderly, and in need of a wheelchair ramp, or other helps. For the widows, we will build a wheelchair ramp, or other needed items. Note: you will need to handle any deed restrictions or permitting requirements.
- Qualifications
-
Unfortunately, there are those who would take advantage of our desire to fulfill God's pure religion. We must therefore take measures that ensure careful stewardship of our time and resources.
FatherlessIn today's culture there are many single-mother households, and adopted orphans. Who qualifies? Any Christian single mother with children living with her, or any Christian parents of a foster home with children, or any Christian parents of adopted children, or an orphanage, who are not otherwise able to afford good beds or other needed items for their fatherless children.
WidowsThe Bible, in 1 Timothy 5:3-16, clearly spells out the qualifications of a "widow indeed." The widow indeed is to be totally cared for by the local church (an assembly of beleivers for the purpose of worshiping and serving Christ). However, our ministry is to any unmarried Christian woman whose husband has died, and who is a member of a local church, and is unable to otherwise afford a wheelchair ramp, or other needed item.
ApplicationTo apply for our service, have the pastor of the church contact us by email, telephone, or letter. We will require:
- The pastor's testimony that the recipient is currently qualified fatherless or widow
- The church's name and telephone number
- The name and telephone number of one or two elders or deacons of the church
- The name, telephone number, and address of the recipient
We will then contact the pastor and elders or deacons to verify the need is genuine (2 Cor. 13:1). Then we will contact the recipient to make sure they know what to expect (sorry, no surprise gifts), and to see if there are any other needs. When we have received payment, we will order the materials and start building. (In the case of a wheelchair ramp, or other item that requires approval and/or permitting, we will wait for the approval and/or permit to arrive.) When we are ready, we will again contact the recipient to schedule a time for delivery or installation.
