Impossible Triangles
by Gwen Fisher Inspired by the Impossible Triangle of Roger Penrose, I decided to make one using box stitch, a three-dimensional version of right angle weave. The triangle on the top was my first attempt, but I accidentally left out one of the twists. This triangle has two distinct edges that each travel around the triangle twice. One edge is gold and the other is black. In my second attempt (bottom), I included all three of the desired quarter twists. This triangle has only one edge, in gold beads, that travels around the triangle four times. Clearly, my triangles are not really impossible because I sewed them in three dimensions. I like to think that they are just highly unlikely. |
