Reinstalling win xp Reboot your computer with the Windows XP installation disc in the CD drive. When you get the message, "Press any key to boot from CD," click Enter. If you don't get this message, reboot and enter Setup (usually by pressing Del or F2; check your computer manual). Change the boot order to CD drive first, then hard drive. Save your change and reboot. When you see the "Welcome to setup" screen, press Enter. When you're told that Windows is already installed, press Esc to replace it. Select the hard drive Windows is on (probably C) and press Enter. Press c when you're warned that an operating system is present. When you get the choice, select "Leave the current file system intact (no changes)." Next, when prompted, press the letter L to delete the Windows folder. If you have more than one user profile, you will probably have to re-establish them. Also, reinstall any applications that are not working. If shareware programs are not working, download and reinstall them. Be sure to download the many fixes Microsoft has released for XP. In Internet Explorer, click Tools and Windows Update. Allow plenty of time--say, a weekend--to reinstall XP. Most likely, something will go wrong along the way. You can expect Windows to test your ability to solve problems!
