Weather - Storm Spotting |
Storm spotting in Green County is an ever growing and crucial need within the amateur radio community. Although you need not be an amateur radio operator to be a storm spotter, but more radio operators are needed to become involved for this particular community service that can save lives. Ham radio weather nets are one of the quickest means of getting storm reports to the National Weather Service where they can then determine the accuracy of the report vs. what they see on radar, and issue warnings accordingly. This page is not designed to teach you to be a storm spotter, but just to provide some simple general information. The SKYWARN and NOAA logos are links to their respective websites which can lead you to educational materials, and listed classes in storm spotting. The NOAA link is to our local weather office in Milwaukee/Sullivan. If you are a ham radio operator, please consider in becoming a spotter in Green County. We have very few involved at this time, and everyone is not available for all times of the day. The more we have involved, the better coverage of the County and time we can provide. If your not a ham radio operator, you still can be involved with us and ride along. Two sets of eyes are better than one, and the more accurate the report can be, and not to mention, much safer in pairs. Safety first!! It is available at: http://www.wdtb.noaa.gov/modules/spotters /player.html As you know, data quality and accuracy are critical to a successful warning program. This brief training course discusses common errors seen with spotter reports and presents ways to mitigate errors from occurring in storm reports. |
