We finally replaced our deteriorating driveway, sidewalk, and front stoop. While we await
landscaping, and time to revamp the web site, here are some pictures of our concrete
work.
Although our garage is no longer under construction, this
web site most definitely is! I plan to use this space primarily as a learning tool for myself, and
secondarily as a personal and family resource. Whether anyone else finds it of any interest, utility,
or amusement is unimportant. To paraphrase Calvin, the web is a magical world, so go exploring!. |

The Highway of the Beast
You can no longer "Get Your Kicks" on Route 666. Politicians in three states had petitioned
the federal government to change the number of Route 666, arguing that bearing
the mark of the beast for the past 77 years was impairing
the economy of the towns along the road. On May 31, 2003 the Feds gave in,
officially changing Route 666 to Route 491.
It will take a year or more, and the Devil knows how much money, for all the signs and
maps to be updated, but rest assured that you can now make your way from Gallup, New Mexico via Cortez,
Colorado to Monticello, Utah without endangering your immortal soul. Although that 2001
movie will no longer have quite the same aura of reality...

for it is the number of a man; and his number is six hundred threescore and six."

Like a bad penny ...
It looks like Wisconsin isn't rid of
Tommy Thompson after all. He announced on June 3 that he will not stay for a second term as
President Bush's Secretary of Health and Human Services. While Thompson's immediate plans are
uncertain, he threatened
"I will someday run for elected office again in Wisconsin."
First Christie Todd Whitman left the Environmental
Protection Agency to return to New Jersey (on May
21), and now this. Hey -- the President is a former governor
too! Dare we hope? |

Vote November 5th!
Regardless of the outcome of the upcoming election, G. W. Bush is almost certain to remain
President for another 2 years. But if you don't bother to vote, the only message you send is that you don't
care what happens -- locally, nationally, or globally. The old saw "I never vote -- it only encourages them"
is a cop-out. In a democracy, voting is one of our means of expressing our pleasure or displeasure with the
actions of our elected representatives.
