OUR PURPOSE AND GOALS:  Gethsemane Lutheran Church established a school for the purpose of assisting the parents of the congregation in teaching their school-aged children the will of the True God and the way to eternal life. Our chief goal in education is, with the help of God, to strengthen the child in his faith, to increase his knowledge of God’s Word offered in the inspired Scriptures, and to enable him to strive out of gratitude to live his life according to God’s will. For this reason, the teaching of the Word of God is all important, for it makes us wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. From a child "you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus" (2 Timothy 3:15).

Daily lessons are held in Bible History, Catechism, and Hymnology in which we show God’s wonderful plan of salvation for them. In Bible History the children learn to know their loving God and how He exerts His influence on their hearts and lives. Catechism is taught to furnish the pupil with a ready summary of the chief truths of God’s Word. Children in grades 6-8 receive confirmation instructions from the pastor. Hymns are memorized as well as Bible passages to make them a source of comfort to be used in time of tribulation, and a weapon against temptation.

All secular subjects are taught in this same spirit, namely, to show how God in heaven has created man and has used him to serve His eternal purpose. The pupils are taught to use whatever gifts God has given them to the best of their abilities to serve God and their fellow-man. In our school the secular subjects are subservient to the Word of God, "that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light." (I Peter 2:9) They are used to show our pupils the wonderful works of God and above all to make them realize the blessing bestowed upon the world by the overwhelming grace of God in Christ Jesus. This fills them more and more with the one great desire in all humbleness to thank and praise, to serve and obey their God. This is our sincere goal and with the help of God we strive to realize that goal.

HOME, SCHOOL AND CHURCH:  Parents who wish to have their children receive a Christian education and training are welcome to enroll their children in our school. The school cannot take the place of the home, but it can assist parents in their God-given duty of "training" their child "in the way he should go." We are convinced that the home must uphold and reinforce the work of the school. The primary responsibility for the child still rests with the parents. We ask you to take an active part in the education of your child. Since our prime concern is with the soul of the child, we want to feed it the Bread of Life.

We expect the full support of the parents in helping their children attend church regularly. We instill in our children love "for preaching and His Word" and expect parents to demonstrate this love in their own family by bringing them to hear that Word.

We appreciate and encourage the interest and inquires on the part of parents regarding their child. You may feel free to visit school at any time. In addition to regular conferences with the teacher, parents are encouraged to consult with the teachers at any time regarding any matter of concern.

FEES:  A book fee of $100 will be assessed to help defray the cost of books and materials used by your children. The material fee for Pre- Kindergarten students is $50. A gym fee of $15 per child will be assessed to all students grades 4-8 in October. This will help pay for gym rental for physical education class. Other fees (hot lunches, field trips, etc.) will be assessed as the need arises.

CURRICULUM:  Our curriculum meets the academic requirements of general education as well as those requirements set down by the state of Michigan. In addition, our curriculum emphasizes Christ and God’s saving love. A systematic study of Bible stories, of the fundamental Christian doctrines, of prayers, of hymns and Bible verses help make God more meaningful in the life of the child. Graduates of Gethsemane are admitted to the high schools in the area on the same basis as those from the public elementary schools. The teachers and the School Board seek to maintain high standards in the school.

Currently, our curriculum list is as follows:

Math Saxon Math: An Incremental Approach copyright 1989-1992

Kindergarten

Science,History     A Beka Book Company

Reading, Spelling   (A Bible-based approach)

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:  Gethsemane offers classes for children from Kindergarten through eighth grade. Those children 5 years old on or before November 1 are eligible for Kindergarten. Those children 6 years old on or before November 1 and who have completed a Kindergarten or equivalent program will be eligible for first grade. Readiness testing is available at the school on request to determine whether your child is ready for Kindergarten or first grade. Any transfer student will be accepted pending receipt of records from his previous school. The final decision regarding all admittance will rest with the School Board.

NONMEMBER ENROLLMENT:  In line with our Lord’s command to "go and teach all nations," we at Gethsemane recognize our specific mission calling. Therefore, we will give proper consideration to all applications of non-members for enrollment in our school. In considering applications, we must obviously take into account the limitations of our building as well as the potential of our teachers.

It is to be understood that all children enrolled at Gethsemane Lutheran School are to be under our spiritual care. This means that the children are to participate in all religion classes including the pastor’s confirmation instruction class in the upper grades (6-8). No advance commitment regarding confirmation or membership will be demanded as a condition of acceptance. We also urge regular attendance at our church services and Sunday School.

Each non-member child’s status will be subject to periodic review by the School Board in conference with the Pastor and Principal. Factors determining continuance at Gethsemane will be academic standing, participation in the congregational affairs, prompt tuition payments, and cooperation with students and teachers.

OPERATING EXPENSES:  The cost of operating our school is borne by the weekly offerings of Gethsemane Lutheran Church. The following is the tuition costs which we charge for our non-members. We encourage our families to use these figures as helpful guidelines in planning the amount of their love-offerings for their Lord.

GRADES 1-8

One child $1000

Two or more children $1500

KINDERGARTNERS

Only one child in school $750

If not the only child in school $500

Non-Member families are to meet with the principal to set up a payment schedule. This payment schedule is to be approved by the School Board.

DISCIPLINE:  Our teachers conscientiously attempt to maintain Christian discipline at all times. We try to treat all children fairly according to Scriptural principles. At the same time, all must realize that students owe willing obedience to their teachers as the fourth Commandment requires. Students are expected to show this respect and obedience to their classroom teachers as God’s representatives. Disciplinary problems will be handled by the teacher. If further disciplinary action is required, the parents will be consulted. Any questions regarding such discipline should be directed to the teacher first. If further questions remain, consult the Principal. Final appeal can be made to the School Board.

There will be no inappropriate physical contact between students, either violent or intimate. Vulgar, confrontational language or gestures will also not be tolerated. If such behavior occurs on the school grounds, the following actions will be taken:

First offense: Students involved will receive one hour detention.

Second offense: Student will receive one day suspension

Third offense: Student will receive a three day suspension.

Fourth offense: Student will be expelled.

Parents of the students involved will meet with the teacher and principal after each offense. Each offense will be reported to the school board and written record of each offense will be dated and kept in the students file. Any concerns maybe expressed to the teacher, principal, or the school board.

SAFETY: Since the safety and the welfare of all students are our responsibility the following guidelines will be enforced:

- No unsafe objects allowed on the school premises. This would include, weapons, knives, matches, lighters, or other objects that would jeopardize the safety of any of the students (Level 2 - one day suspension).

- Students will not be allowed to leave the school premises without parental consent (Level 2 - one day suspension).

- Students will be supervised by an adult when on the playground.

- Students must wear safety belts when being transported during school events.

- Students will not be allowed in school before 7:50 a.m. and are encouraged to leave the school grounds by 3:30 p.m. unless they are involved in after school activities. Any exceptions must be approved by the faculty.

Playground Rules

Matthew 5:16 "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven."

We promote good Christian conduct for our students at all times and in all aspects of their lives. God’s Word gives us the motivation for such conduct in 2 Corinthians 5: 14 -15; "For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again." We therefore set forth these guidelines for promoting good playground behavior.

1. Be safe - no throwing of objects, horseplay, etc.

2. Be respectful - of all adults and others, this would include no backtalk, name calling, or inappropriate language.

3. Be Christian - let our behavior be a reflection of the love Christ has shown us.

Ephesians 4:32-5:2 "And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ forgave you. Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma."

Since the parents are responsible for their children’s behavior on the playground after school, students will not be dismissed until their ride is here. Children are expected to abide by the rules as long as they are on the school grounds. If a staff member witnesses inappropriate behavior by a student, the parent will be approached, made aware of it, and may be asked to take the child home.

We discourage entering and leaving the building after school has been dismissed. Indoor play will also be discouraged after school has been dismissed.

INSURANCE:

EMERGENCY CLOSINGS:  Announcements regarding the emergency closing of school due to inclement weather will be made over the radio on WSGW 790 AM, or the principal will call you. If Saginaw Township closes or starts late we will also.

DRESS CODE:  Neatness and modesty should be shown regarding the clothes children wear to school. Accordingly then, halter tops, and ragged jeans are not acceptable school clothes. We discourage the wearing of sweat pants and T-shirts. We expect parents and students to use good taste and judgment in the matter of school attire.

Shorts may be worn from May through the end of September but must follow the following guidelines:

1) Appropriate length: Shorts should be mid-thigh length or longer.

2) Appropriate style: dress or jean shorts, no cut offs or writing on shorts is allowed.

Any jewelry worn by students shall be limited as follows:

1) Boys may wear a ring, watch, or neck chain.

2) Girls may wear a ring, watch, bracelet, single pair of traditional, non-dangling earrings.

The School Board will review all dress code concerns as the Board deems necessary. We also ask that each child have one extra pair of shoes or to use inside the school building only. THESE SHOES ARE TO REMAIN AT SCHOOL ALL YEAR FOR INSIDE USE ONLY. The purpose for this is to preserve, as much as possible, the carpeting and flooring of the school.

SCHOOL DAY: The school day will begin at 8:15 sharp, and run until 3:15. Tardiness will not be tolerated. If a student is tardy 3 times a quarter, it will be counted as an absence, and he or she will have to make up time after school. We also encourage parents to pick up their children at 3:15. We would appreciate it if all students would be on their way home by 3:30. The children are the parents responsibility after school. Children will not be dismissed until their ride is at school.

ABSENCES:  Children are expected to attend school whenever it is in session. This includes any field trips. If, for some reason, your child must miss school, please let the teacher know ahead of time, if possible. If, this is not possible, a note or phone call of explanation is required. Students will not receive credit for unexcused absences. If a student acquires more than 20 days of absenteeism he or she may be subject to retention. Students that are tardy will serve detention after school for their tardiness. Frequent tardiness will also be reported to the school board.

APPOINTMENTS: Regarding appointments (doctor, dentist, etc.) your children may need to meet throughout the year, please make every effort to schedule them at times other than school hours. This will keep your child from falling behind and means less repeat work for the teachers.

TRANSPORTATION:  Any student living in Saginaw Township will be able to use township buses. Simply inform the principal that you would like your child bussed and he will take care of it.

The Principal will assist anyone who wishes to take part in car pooling.

SUPPLIES:  All textbooks and workbooks are purchased through the school. Any book damaged or lost by a student will be replaced at the family’s expense.

Contained in the following chart are supplies your child should have throughout the school year. Please check with your children periodically. (X stands for one of each.)
