John Richmond

John Richmond was born about 1594 in either England or Ireland. He was a member of a seafaring family.

By 1636 he was involved in a law suit in Saco, Maine. He, with some retainers lived there or near there on Richmond Island. George Richmond, for whom the island was named in about 1628, is thought to have been a relative to John. From February, 1636, until June, 1637, The records of Saco mention John Richmond seven times. Then in 1637 John was one of the original purchasers of Taunton, Massachusetts. The land was purchased from the Indian Sachem "King Philip" for the amount of 143 pounds. John probably broght his family from England at this time.

The Richmonds lived at Taunton only a short time before moving on to Rhode Island where John built a Mansion House near the Mill Brook at Newport. The Mill Brook was probably the Stony River. Records show him in Providence in 1660 but he moved back to Taunton by 1663, where he died march 20, 1664.

The wife of John Richmond probably died on the voyage from England or was a victim of pioneer life. There is no record of her Identity.
