History 314 The Southern Migration Virginia Carpenter Jansen 8 April 2002

SOUTHERN MIGRATION

Virginia was the first settled colony with permanent settlement starting in
1609. These Colonist were Anglicans and less rigid in their practices than
Puritans. In the South, wealthy landowners were more important. The original
settlements were water bound as roads were to hard to build and water was the
cheapest means of transportation.

As the ancestors of Elizabeth Glidewell arrived, they made their way up the
rivers onto land that had to be cleared. From the settlements the migration
went up the river and down the coast to North Carolina. The colonies followed
English Law with the rule of primogeniture, leaving the majority of the estate
to the oldest son, leaving the younger sons to have to find land for themselves.
During the early years of the colonies, the major currency was that of tobacco;
taxes and debts were figured in pounds. Thus the availability of water
transportation was necessary.

Our southern migration includes two streams of settlers through Virginia.

One stream. the ancestors of Elizabeth Glidewell, composed of the Clements,
Bell, Aston, Bird, Sutton, Nash and Glidewell descendants flowed through the
tidewater swamps of southern Virginia and then around Albemarle Sound into
North Carolina and eastern South Carolina, with some crossing Cherokee lands
to Alabama and Mississippi.

The second stream, the ancestors of Richard Stiles, composed of the Worsham,
Rowlett, Archer, Cousins and Stiles families started in Chesterfield County
just south of Richmond and followed the southside Virginia rivers inland
without going into North Carolina.

The streams met well inland on Little Blue Wing Creek in Halifax County VA as
Robert Glidewell moved back into VA from North Carolina and Richard Stiles
moved west from Mecklenberg County into Halifax County.

Then after the American Revolution the Stiles and Glidewell families moved
together to Duncan's Creek in Laurens County, South Carolina, where they met
baptist preacher Rev Joshua Palmer and became members of his congregation.
He then led them to Ohio west of Cincinnati where they settled at West
Liberty, Union County, Indiana. The Stiles and Palmers continued migrating
together, drifting across Indiana and then to Sullivan County, Missouri.

The CLEMENTS Connection

Our first ancestor who emigrated to Virginia in 1611 was Elizabeth Fuller,
widow of Jeffery Clements. She was born in 1579 at London, England, daughter
of Sir Cuthbert Fuller and Ann Phillipps. Her husband Sir Jeffery Clements was
born in 1576 at Doddringhurst, Essex County, the son of Jeffery Clements and
Elizabeth Reynolds. He had chartered the London Virginia Company in 1607 but
died in 1609 at Oxford. Elizabeth came over on the family yacht George with
four children Nicholas, Ezekiel, Jeremy and Elizabeth. A passenger on the
return trip was Pocahontas, wife of John Rolfe. Elizabeth married twice more
and eventually died in England about 1628.

Jeremiah Clements patented 350 acres at Chipoake Creek in SurryCo VA in 1633
based on his mother's claim for transport. He married Edey PIERCE? in 1628 at
James City VA and had at least four children including our ancestor John Clements,
who was fined because he was a Captain in Bacon's rebellion in 1675. John remained
on the family estate in Southwark Parish, SurryCo VA until his death in 1710 at
the age of 79 years.

The Family of John CLEMENTS II (1659-1734)

At this point the Clements family descent becomes somewhat murky. Apparently
John born about 1659 son of John Clements was an ensign in the SurryCo VA
militia 1687/92. We next find him in BertieCo NC witnessing the will
of David Frasier in 1729. Then in his own will of 1734 he describes himself as
a trader and carefully parcels out his estate to each and every member of the
Robert Bell family. We assume that his daughter, name unknown, possibly Penelope
Clements, married Robert Bell and that another daughter Isabel may have
married Michael King.

The BELL Connection

We know of no evidence that the BELLs of IsleOfWightCo VA are closely
related to the BELLs of AccomackCo VA. These latter claim an unproved
descent from Sir Robert BELL of NorfolkCo ENGL. Perhaps by coincidence
the five sons of George BELL(1625-1702) of IsleOfWightCo VA
have similar given names (Thomas, George, Robert, William and John) as
the sons of his contemporary Thomas BELL(1618-1678) of AccomackCo VA.

We have arbitrarily arranged the family structures of the BELL families of
NorfolkCo ENGL, AccomackCo VA, IsleOfWightCo VA and northeastern NC to give
Robert BELL (1675-1738) as a son of George BELL (1625-1702) and George BELL
of IsleOfWightCo VA and Richard BELL of SurryCo VA as brothers of Robert and
Thomas BELL of AccomacCo VA, so that the five sons of George BELL of
IsleOfWightCo VA and of Thomas BELL of AccomackCo VA would be first cousins.
This should speed the evaluation of the relationships between the BELL
families by providing definite generational relationships and test points,
which can be removed later if disproved.

The Family of Robert BELL (1675-1758) of Chowan Co and Bertie Co, North Carolina

Robert Bell was transported to Virginia about 1705, and received land in
New Kent County, later in Essex County VA by 1705. This does not necessarily
mean that he was born in England. It was common for the sons of the early
Virginia colonists to go to England for education and return, with land
awarded for their transport back. He was probably born in Isle of Wight
County about 1675.

Robert was associated with the much older Henry Woodnot before 1715 in
Essex County VA, and eventually received his estate. Robert's children George,
Jean, Mary, John and Archibald Bell from his first wife were probably born
in Essex County. Then he remarried and moved to Chowan County, North Carolina,
by 1715. His new wife Ann was apparently the widow Ferguson, with a daughter
Isobel and perhaps a newly deceased mother-in-law Isobel Ferguson. We have
not found a male Ferguson from this family. Robert apparently had a daughter
Penelope from this marriage, who we assume was named after his first wife,
a daughter of John Clements, the Indian? trader.

In 1721 Robert Bell moved to Bertie County on the north bank of the Cashie
River where he was buried in a dedicated cemetery in 1738. His long association
with Michael King is unexplained, but may mean they both married daughters of
John Clements, who died in 1734 in Bertie County, willing his estate to
Robert Bell and each of his children, although it does not mention that
they are relatives. By this time the Bells were well connected to the Birds
with his daughter Mary married to John Bird and her sister Jean Bell married
to John's brother William Bird. Robert Bell's son Archibald Bell moved to
Duplin County, North Carolina along with his brother-in-law William Bird.

The Family of Lt Comdr Walter ASTON (1606-1657)

Lt. Comdr. Walter Aston came to Virginia from Langdon, StaffordCo, England, and
owned a plantation at Westover until his death in 1656. He had a family of six
children by two wives. The second wife Hannah Jourdan married secondly Col.
Edward Hill.

We believe our ancestor Deborah Aston(also called Astine) was Walter Aston's
daughter. She married three times, the first time to our ancestor Nathaniel
Sutton, who was born in 1650 at Scituate MA son George Sutton and Sarah Tilden.
He died 29Dec1682 in PerquimansCo, North Carolina. She then married John Whidbee
had 2 more children and he died in 1700. She then married Dennis McClendon, a
Scotsman? with a large family. There was litigation between the McClendons and
the Suttons over her first husband's estate, but she outlived Dennis McClendon
by 26 years, dying in 1732 at PerquimansCo NC.

The SUTTON Family

The place of origin of George Sutton in England is not certain, and his
1613 birthdate probably came from Quaker records. He came over on the Hercules
in 1634 to Plymouth with the Nathaniel Tilden family from Tenterden, KentCo,
England. After the Suttons converted to quakerism, George's son Nathaniel went
to North Carolina by 1660. By 1668 Nathaniel had married Deborah (Astine) Aston of
Virginia, and the father George soon moved south and died in 1669 at Perquimans
Co NC, which was a quaker colony. Most of George's eight children stayed in
New England.

The BIRD Connection

The Bird family can be traced back in England to the time of William
the Conqueror. The best known family member in Virginia was William Byrd,
who accumulated large landholdings and lived at Westover VA. He surveyed
the Virginia - North Carolina border. Our Bird family is descended from
his uncle William Bird who came to Virginia somewhat earlier and settled
at Martins Brandon in Surry Co VA.

The Family of William BIRD (1610-1672)

William Bird was a London silversmith before emigrating to Virginia. When
he died his children became wards of Nevitt Wheeler, who was probably his
wifes's brother. Nevitt Wheeler was implicated in Nathaniel Bacon's
rebellion and has not been traced further. William Bird married again to
Hannah Grendon before his death. William's son Thomas inherited the Surry
County estate, and his sons John and William moved south to the Albemarle
District of North Carolina.

The Family of William BIRD (1704-<1777) and Jean BELL

Our ancestor William Bird born about 1704 in Chowan County married about 1725/30
to Jean Bell daughter of Robert Bell. They had at least 6 sons and moved several
times to acquire new lands, first to Bertie County, then to Duplin County, and
finally to Sumter District, South Carolina. At least two of his sons continued
westward across Cherokee lands to Alabama and Mississippi.

There is no firm evidence linking Robert Glidewell's wife Elizabeth to William
Bird's family. The chief clues are that one of their two sons was William and
that some of their grandchildren had first names Byrd, e.g. Byrd Stiles,
Byrd Palmer. Also after his father's death in Bristol Parish VA Robert Glidewell
was bound out to a Thomas CLEMMONS. This Thomas Clemmons, who probably died at
BeaufortCo NC, was apparently a son of Francis Clements of SurryCo VA and a
cousin of John Clements grandfather of Robert Glidewell's wife Elizabeth
Bird. Thus the binding out of Robert Glidewell to Thomas Clemmons temporarily
moved him eastward from ChesterfieldCo VA where he was born to SurryCo VA into
the stream migrating southward into eastern North Carolina.

Robert Glidewell lived in GranvilleCo NC for a time before 1760,
and both he, William Bird and William Bird's son John owned land in Granville
County before the Birds moved on to Duplin Co NC. We reason that this William
Bird is the only one to fit the specifications for Robert Glidewell's
father-in-law. There was ample opportunity for Robert Glidewell to meet and
marry Elizabeth in Granville County, North Carolina, and both the Birds and
Glidewells eventually went on to the waters of Lynches Creek in South
Carolina.

The Family of Robert NASH (1670-1748) and Susanna Watson?

The Robert Nash shown here may be a composite of different individuals. We
conclude that since Robert Glidewell and Elizabeth named their older son
Nash Glidewell that her surname was Nash and that her father's name was also
Robert, confounding a normal first name. With their daughter's name Susan,
we found only one marriage: Robert Nash and Susan Watson at London, England
that fit the requirements for parents of Elizabeth born about 1702, and
only one Robert Nash in Virginia. Following Robert Nash through London and
Virginia, we believe that he made at least one false start at colonizing,
married three times and moved northward to Gloucester County, marrying for
the last time late in life. He was obviously quite poor and alone when he
died in Westmoreland County VA in 1748, probably at least 75 years old.

The GLIDEWELL Family

Robert Glidewell, probably the uncle of our Robert, came to VA about 1675,
and married the widow of Robert Gent in HenricoCo VA before 1690. He was
guardian to his stepson Thomas Gent, who in turn was guardian to his disabled
son Daniel Glidewell. This seems more plausible than Daniel being an old man
who somehow shows up in VA.

The possibility still exists that Robert GLIDEWELL the assumed uncle and our
ancestor Robert GLIDEWELL are the same person emigrating from London, England,
to Virginia in 1675 and reemigrating in 1716. Thus the life of Robert Glidewell
might be similar to the composite life of his father-in law Robert Nash given
above. Data problems favoring this hypothesis are the marriage of young Robert
Glidewell at age 19 in 1720 and his death of cancer at only 28 years of age in
1729. Nevertheless we believe that our ancestor Robert was born GLADWELL at
London, England, and emigrated at the age of 14 or 15 years.

Our Robert Glidewell was probably the son born in London in 1701 to William
Gladwell and Alice Briant and transported to VA in 1716. He married Elizabeth
Nash? about 1720 in HenricoCo VA and had three children Nash, Robert and Susan
before he died of cancer in 1729. After being a widow for 3 years, Elizabeth
gave birth to Terence Lamb Glidewell who later lived in SylvaniaCo VA.
Elizabeth continued to live in Chesterfield Co VA until 1765 when the sheriff
took administration of her meager estate.

The Family of Robert GLIDEWELL (1722-1809) and Elizabeth Bird?

The origin of Robert Glidewell's wife Elizabeth BYRD? was a mystery until he was
found in the GranvilleCo NC militia in the French and Indian War, and the
William BYRD family was found there also. Robert then moved to Halifax Co VA,
probably because his brother Nash Glidewell had bought land there. When his sons
William and Robert Glidewell came back after the Revolution, he accompanied
them and his daughter Elizabeth, who had married Richard Stiles in Halifax Co VA,
to Duncans Creek, Laurens County South Carolina. The agreement he signed with
Richard Stiles to exchange his assets for perpetual care in 1801 in South
Carolina was found in the probate papers of the widow Elizabeth Stiles who died
in UnionCo Indiana in 1826. These papers also showed that Robert died in 1809
at ButlerCo Ohio.

The Family of Elizabeth GLIDEWELL(1758-1828) and Richard STILES (1759-1806)

Our ancestor Richard Stiles married Elizabeth Glidewell about 1778 in Halifax
County, Virginia. They moved to LaurensCo SC about 1785 and were members of
the Duncans Creek Baptist Church whose minister was Rev. Joshua Palmer. In
1805 most of the church members followed Joshua Palmer across the Appalachian
and Cumberland Mountains through Kentucky to the Dry Fork of the Whitewater
River west of Cincinnati Ohio. Richard Stiles died in 1806 in Butler County,
Ohio, leaving Elizabeth a widow with 10 children and her aged father Robert
Glidewell. She was well off and the money from her husband and her father was
used to buy land in Union County, Indiana. The land was purchased in the name
of her oldest son Byrd Stiles, but he died about 1815 leaving a widow and three
children. His widow Charlotte remarried to John Hutson who was named guardian
to her Stiles children, provoking a legal battle that lasted over 10 years
until after Elizabeth Stiles died and the children became adults.

Our ancestor Rebecca Stiles (1789-1831) daughter of Richard Stiles and Elizabeth
Glidewell was born at Duncans Creek, Laurens Co, South Carolina. She married
in 1808 at Butler Co, Ohio, to James Armstrong, who was born at Huntingdon Co PA.
This marriage to a northerner of Scot-Irish descent ends our all southern
ancestry, but the southern family cultural influence was still strong when
Rebecca Stiles' grandson, our ancestor James Monroe Kitchel, was raised from
babyhood by his aunt Amy Armstrong wife of Elihu Palmer, both descendants of
the migration from South Carolina to Indiana.
