Our Shallenberger Family in America

The Mary Salome (Sarah) Shallenberger - Emanuel Carpenter family of Lancaster, Fairfield County, Ohio

Our ancestor Emanuel Carpenter III (1782-1818) married Mary Salome (Sarah)
Shallenberger (1780-1813) about 1801 in Fairfield County, Ohio. Sarah was
a sister of David Shallenberger (1770-1805) who had claimed 5 sections of
land and had married Emanuel's sister Salome (Sally) in 1800. David died
without issue in 1805 and Sally married Isaac Koontz.

Sarah Shallenberger was a niece of General Henry MILLER who served in
the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. Sarah was also a niece of Michael
CRYDER of Chilicothe, Ohio, who had married two daughters of Daniel Carpenter
in Lancaster County PA.

Emanuel and Sarah had a family of 5 children before she died in 1813:

The Michael Shallenberger (1736-1793) - Barbara Kreider (1744-1800) family of Lancaster County PA and Fairfield County, Ohio

Michael SHALLENBERGER was born about 1736 somewhere in Europe after his
parents left Worb Dorp at the entrance to the Emmenthal valley east of
Berne, Switzerland. He came to America in November 1750 with John and
Christian Rupp on the ship Brotherhood. He was probably the Johann
Michael Shallenberger confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in
Lancaster PA that winter.

In 1768 he was a blacksmith in Earl Twp., perhaps learning the trade
from his wife's stepfather John Miller who founded Millersville in
Manor Twp. He was a land trader and bought land in Warwick Twp. in
1768. He sold it in 1775 and moved to Leacock Twp, and also
owned land in Manheim Twp when he died in 1792.

Michael's widow Barbara KREIDER (1744-1800) was the daughter of
Johann Jacob KREIDER and Elizabeth MEYER? and the sister of Michael
CRYDER of Chilicothe, Ohio. She was also the half-sister of
General Henry Miller (1751-1824) of Lancaster County PA. After
Michael died in 1792, John Shallenberger (his only brother) and John
Kurtz were appointed guardians of the older children. Michael
Hess (her first cousin) and Jacob Rupp were appointed guardians
of Barbara's younger children. She moved to Ohio with her children
in 1798 and died in Dec 1800 at the home of her daughter Barbara,
the wife of Martin Landis in Madison Twp., Fairfield County, Ohio.

The Family of Henry Shallenberger (1773-1846) and Elizabeth Carpenter of Fairfield County, Ohio, and Shelby County, Illinois.

Henry Shallenberger was appointed guardian of his younger brothers and
sisters after the move to Ohio, and has sometimes been mistaken for their
father. He married Elizabeth Carpenter, a young widow with 3 children.
She was a sister of Emanuel and Salome Carpenter who had married Henry's
siblings. Elizabeth's son Israel Carpenter and their children Henry C.
and Elizabeth Shallenberger accompanied their parents when they moved
in 1835 to Shelby County, Illinois.

Our SHALLENBERGER Lineage in Switzerland

We studied Shallenberger/Shellenberger families in southern Germany, in
eastern France, and in Zurich Canton, Switzerland, without success. Finally
we accepted the match between Michael's brother John Shallenberger who
died April 8, 1814, in his 83rd year and Hans Ulli (Johannes) Schallenberger
baptized July 30, 1731, at Worb Dorf, Canton Bern, son of Johannes
Schallenberger and Anna Bigler. The birth was registered at Signau,
indicating that his family had come from there.

Once the birthplace of Johannes Shallenberger was accepted as Worb Dorf,
it was possible to construct a lineage back 5 more generations to 1600
in the Emmenthal valley. However, the lineage is not unique, because
others are possible using the available parish register evidence. Here we
present our first choice which may disagree with the construction by others.
Resolution of the controversy will require searching for other kinds of
records, although everyone concerned agrees that the Schallenbergers took
their name from the Schallenberg pass to the south of the valley.

The Hans Schallenberger - Elsbeth Liechti family of Signau SWITZ

Hans Schallenberger of Langnau born 1665/70 married Elsbeth Liechti of Signau
and became a citizen of Signau, Emmenthal, Bern Canton, Switzerland. Their son
Jacob (1680-1745) married Anna Moser of Grosshoechstettin and lived at Vechigen
and Biglen, hillside villages above Worb, when his eldest son Hans was born in
1703 at Biglen. Hans was later registered at Signau as an ausburger, and Jacob
died in 1745 at Schuppach between Langnau and Signau.

The Hans Schallenberger (1703-1784) - Anna Bigler (1711-1751+) family of Worb Dorf, Bern Canton SWITZ) and EarlTwp, Lancaster Co PA

Here we present the working hypothesis that Hans SCHALLENBERGER and Anna BIGLER
of Worb Dorf, Canton Berne, Switzerland emigrated to PA on the ship Queen of
Denmark in 1751 and were the parents of Johannes, Barbara, Anna, Michael,
Catherine and Magdalena Schallenberger.

So far we only know for sure that John Shallenberger's 1814 will says that
Michael is his only brother and that Barbara Yoder and Catherine Geiman are
his sisters. We infer that Anna (Shellenberger on her tombstone) was also a
sister, and that Magdalena was also a sister. John is buried in the Lehn
cemetery in Manheim township. His tombstone says Johannes Schallenberger age
83. The passenger list of the Queen of Denmark has Jacob Yoder next to Hans
Schallenberg. We believe that Jacob Yoder is the future husband of Barbara
Shallenberger and that Hans Schallenberg is either Michael's brother John
or Hans the ASSUMED! father of our family. There is still a large gap between
what we know and what we are assuming, but we hope to converge on the truth
as more data become available.

Hans Schallenberger was born in 1703 at Biglen, the eldest son of
Jacob Schallenberger and Anna Moser. About 1729 he married Anna
BIGLER a daughter of Hans Bigler and Anna Walthar. Their eldest
son Hans Ulli, or Johannes, was baptized at Worb Dorf and recorded
as an "ausburger" citizen of Signau. Perhaps their
daughter Barbara was born at Worb Dorf in 1734; abstracters disagree
as to whether her mother was Anna Bigler or Anna Jenni. In 1734 there
was an exodus of anabaptists from Berne Canton. We don't know where
our Shallenbergers went for the next 17 years before they came to
Philadelphia on October 4, 1751, on the ship Queen of Denmark.

When Johannes (Hans Ulli) Shallenberger arrived in Earl Twp perhaps
in 1751, he may have immediately claimed land, because there is an
Ulli Soulaparger on the 1750-1751 tax lists of Earl Twp. In 1767 John
Shallenberger had 50 acres surveyed in Earl Twp. By 1770 a John Shallenberger
was listed as a tailor, owning 10 acres near the site of New Holland in
Earl Twp. John and his wife Elizabeth sold land or lots in 1773,
1782, and 1783(twice). There was briefly a David Shallenberger in Earl
Twp in 1767, who cannot be connected to any of the other Shallenbergers
in America, so it may be that Michael and John had a brother David. The
ownership of 10 and 50 acres by John Shallenbergers persisted until 1784,
when one of them (presumably the father Hans) died intestate. by 1792
Johannes had moved to Manheim Twp and sold his 10 acres at New Holland.

In 1766 Johannes had married Mary daughter of Charles Cookson, but
there was apparently no issue from this marriage. Before 1771 he married
Elizabeth Lehn age 24 daughter of Peter Lehn, but there was no issue from
this marriage either. Johannes and his wife Elizabeth were buried at the
Lehn Cemetery in Manheim Township.

Michael Shallenberger was called a blacksmith of Earl Twp when he bought
113 acres in 1767 from the Hess families in Warwick twp. He and his wife
Barbara sold the land in 1775 and moved to Leacock Twp, buying 183 acres
from James Crawford. He also bought 100 acres in Manheim Twp from the
heirs of Sarah Graff.

Families of the sisters of Michael Shallenberger in America

The Anna Shallenberger (1735-1808) - Christian RUPP (1732-1810) Family

The brothers Christian and John Rupp of Earl Twp Lancaster Co were closely
associated with Michael Shallenberger. All three of them probably arrived on
the ship "Brotherhood" 3Nov1750. Christian Rupp married Anna, an older sister
of Michael Shallenberger. Some descendants of the Christian Rupp moved to
Carroll County, Maryland where they spelled the name Roop.

The origin of the family of the Rupp brothers in Europe is unknown. There are
many Rupps near Eppingen in the Kraichgau northwest of Stuttgart, Germany,
where the ancestor of the Lancaster County historian Rupp came from. There
are also Rupps in Berne Canton SWITZ and among those living as refugees in
France during the early 1700s.

The Family of Barbara Shallenberger (1733-1812) and
Jacob YODER 1730-1815) of Marion Twp, Berks County PA

Jacob Yoder came to PA in 1751 on the same ship as Hans
Schallenberger. They were enumerated together with Dr Hans
Blank, who fled from Bern to Mimelgart, France in 1734. Dr. Blank
gathered together a large group of orphans and went with them
in 1751 to America. This was about the time the protestant Dukes
of Wuerttemburg were ousted from Mimelgart by the catholic French
kings who changed its name to Montbeliard.

The Family of Catherine Shallenberger (1740/5-d bef 1810) and Christian
GEIMAN (1735-1800/10) of Berne Canton Switzerland and Carroll County MD

This pattern of migration, leaving the Emmenthal in 1734, living for two
decades in the Jura Mountains or in eastern France in exile and emigrating
to Pennsylvania in the early 1750's is what we expect to be the pattern
for the Johannes SCHALLENBERGER family.

The KREIDER Family

The KREIDER Lineage

A Kreider lineage has been established by Edward H. Kryder originating
at Buempliz just south of Bern SWITZ to Colmar, Upper Alsace, France. In
this lineage Jacob born 1649 the eldest son of Baschen Gruetter was not
mentioned in his father's 1688 will and has been assumed to have died
without issue.

The Jacob and Hans Greider in the 1715 census of Ittlingen, Kraichgau, Baden,
Germany have usually been assumed to be brothers with Jacob being older than
Hans, but researchers have never found the origin of the brothers in SWITZ
or anywhere else.

Here we propose that Jacob did not die in Alsace, and that Hans is the son
of Jacob by a first marriage about 1675. With Jacob (age 66 in 1715) being
too old to emigrate to America, this allows us to connect the Kreider lineage
from Buempliz SWITZ through Colmar FRANCE and Ittlingen GERMANY with the
emigration of Jacob's sons Hans, Michael and Jacob to Lancaster County PA.

The Michael KREIDER family of Ittlingen, Baden, Germany and Lancaster County PA

Our ancestor Michael Kreider (1691-1739) was the eldest son of Jacob
Greider and Barbara Schenk. He married Barbara Graf at Ittlingen,
Germany about 1716 and emigrated to PA by 1722.

His eldest son Johann Jacob Kreider married Elizabeth (daughter? of
Hans Conrad Meyer? and Anna Liechti?). They had two children Michael
and our ancestor Barbara before Jacob died in 1745. His widow Elizabeth
married again about 1750 to a widower John Miller, and they had a son
General Henry Miller (1751-1829), who fought with George Washington in
the American Revolution and in the War of 1812 against the British.

The Family of Balser Hess (1747-1806) and Mary Hensel (1763-1855)

Barbara, wife of Michael SHALLENBERGER, was the sister of Michael CRYDER,
who married two daughters of Daniel CARPENTER. The Balser HESS family is joined to
the Michael CRYDER family by two marriages of CRYDER sons to HESS daughters. Also a
daughter of Balser HESS was the second wife of Emanuel CARPENTER and another
daughter was the wife of Emanuel's nephew Israel CARPENTER. Thus Barbara's
daughter Mary Salome(Sarah) SHALLENBERGER, the first wife of our ancestor
Emanuel CARPENTER, was a niece of Michael CRYDER. Michael CRYDER is featured
in the book by Dr Seymour D. CARPENTER as a pioneer of RossCo OH. Balser HESS
had a falling out with Michael CRYDER in RossCo OH because Michael patented
his land claim which Balser had delayed doing. Balser HESS then moved to
Franklinton, just across the Scioto River from Columbus OH.

Note that Balser HESS was the son of Caspar HESS, who is not closely related
to the family of Michael HESS. The latter was named guardian of Barbara's younger
children after the death of Michael SHALLENBERGER in 1792, probably because as
her first cousin (son of Michael HESS and Barbara KRYTER) he was the nearest
suitable relative still living in Lancaster County.

The Meyer - Liechti - Miller Group

From here on the ancestry is quite speculative and involves two
widows in succession who each married 2 or 3 times. The odds
against our being correct are high and even higher against being
able to prove the whole saga.

Anna, either a Liechti or widow of a Liechti from Bern Canton,
married about 1720 in Lancaster County PA Hans Conrad Meyer, who
already had a child Barbara by his first wife. Conrad soon died and
mentions THE children, but not by name in his will.

Barbara Meyer married Velten Schultz and had one son Henry Schulz,
who claimed he was the only heir to Barbara Schulz. He also said he
was the only heir to Conrad Meyer; however, the land he claimed
was less than the land that Conrad Meyer had patented. We believe that
Conrad Meyer had at least one child Elizabeth Meyer by his second
wife Anna Liechti.

The widow Anna Liechti Meyer then married Hans Graf who died in 1726 and
later Peter Lehman who died by 1741.

The Family of John MILLER, stepfather of Barbara KREIDER
and founder of Millersville, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania

One of the keys to the surname of Elizabeth MEYER? wife of John Jacob KREIDER
is the identity of Elizabeth's second husband John MILLER.

John Miller was a land developer, general store owner and blacksmith from
Lancaster County PA during the middle and later part of the 18th century. He
is considered to be the founder of Millersville, the home of Millersville State
College. He laid out the town site in 1761 and soon afterwards began selling
and renting five acre plots. Financial mismanagement and a local recession
led to his arrest as a debtor in 1767. He never quite rebounded from his
untimely investments and returned to being a blacksmith.

After John Miller spent time in debtors' prison he built a house on Queen
Street in Lancaster. He was a blacksmith like his stepdaughter's husband
Michael SHALLENBERGER and kept a detailed account book that was found in the
attic of his house on Queen Street over 120 years after his death. Some
information on his family was obtained from it for the History of Lancaster
County in 1924 by H. M. J. Klein. We have not yet been able to find the 300
page folio itself but are still searching for it. It may contain more
definitive information on his wife Elizabeth.

Henry Miller was the youngest son of John Miller, and no doubt our ancestor
Elizabeth Meyer was his mother. He was born 13Feb1751 in ManorTwp, a date when
some researchers claim that Elizabeth was not a Meyer but had married a Meyer
between husbands John Jacob Kreider and John Miller. Henry grew up in Lancaster
and studied law there. He moved to York County where he was admitted to the bar.
On 26Jun1770 he married Ursula Rose, daughter of an Irishman who had graduated
from Dublin University. From 1772 to 1774 he was collector of Excise for York
County.

On 14Jun1775 he became senior lieutenant in the company of riflemen recruited
by Capt. Michael Doudle. They were the first from south of Long Island to reach
Cambridge MA and fought even before the battle of Bunker Hill, capturing enemy
sentries on the hill to extract information. The riflemen re-enlisted into the
Pennsylvania Line and on 22Aug 1776 on Long Island the riflemen pushed back the
enemy in skirmishes three times. As a result Captain Miller was reviewed
by General George Washington. Then they crossed the East River in the dead of
night, and Henry Miller was the last man to get on the boats and "when they
pushed off and were supposed to be out of danger, the fog of the morning still
overhanging them, he stood up, hat in hand and gave three hearty cheers. This
brought down on them a volley of musketry that nearly swamped the boats."

Captain Miller also played an important part in surprising and capturing 919
Hessians at Trenton when Washinton crossed the Delaware on 28 Dec. Major
Miller was also in the battles of Morristown, Germantown and Monmouth. He
said about Monmouth " Col Morgan is on their rear. I had the misfortune of
having two horses killed under me during the action; the first by a cannon and
the second by a musket ball." After Monmouth he resigned to take care of his
family. He was an original member of the Society of the Cincinnatus.

He also served under President Washington during the Whiskey Insurrection and
was appointed collector of federal revenue for Pennsylvania. In the War of
1812 he was recalled twice, and General Miller was charged with the defense
of Fort McHenry when the Star Spangled Banner was written.

We know that some of the Watts family got into the DAR on Henry Miller and we
are hopeful that they may have the account book of John Miller or join common
cause with us to verify the surname of Henry Miller's mother.
