THE MANUFACTURERS WATER COMPANY

HISTORICAL DATA

1941

The Manufacturers Water Company records are not kept in Johnstown and for that reason the data furnished is taken from what available information we have on hand.

The Manufacturers Water Company was chartered February 19, 1900 for the supply, storage and transportation of water and water power for commercial and manufacturing purposes in Cambria County. On November 15, 1910 the charter was amended to limit the district served to the city of Johnstown.

The same year the company was incorporated,it began using water from an intake on the Little Conemaugh River, 6.6 miles above the confluence with the Stonycreek River.

Due to the pollution of the Stonycreek River the Border Intake became undesirable for domestic service to the city of Johnstown but could be used for industrial purposes. During 1900 the Border Intake on the Stonycreek River and the 36-inch pipe line leading to the city was leased by the Manufacturers Water Company from the Johnstown Water Company.

The supply from the above two sources was not sufficient for commercial and industrial purposes during the dry season. In order to augment the same a dam was constructed on Hinckston Run, 3.3 miles above the confluence with the Conemaugh River during the years 1902-1905. A 24-inch pipe line was laid to the Cambria Works. The capacity of Hinckston Run Reservoir is 1,124,000 gallons.

Due to mine drainage the intake on the Little Conemaugh River was moved upstream to a point 2,900 feet below the mouth of the South Fork branch. In addition to wooden stave pipe line was laid from the new location and connected to the existing 20-inch pipe line at the original location on the Little Conemaugh River. As the mills expanded additional water was required. On November 17, 1910 the waters of Quemahoning Creek were appropriated and the construction of the Quemahoning Dam was started. The dam and the 66-inch pipe line were completed in 1913. The 66-inch pipe line is 14 miles long, crosses the Stonycreek River 13 times and passes through 5 tunnels with an aggregate length of 9,000 feet. The capacity of the reservoir is 11,500,000,000 gallons. The amount of water delivered from this source varies from 75,000,000 to 90,000,000 gallons per day.

Due to mine drainage all water supplied by the Manufacturers Water Company is treated with lime except the Hinckston Run Reservoir supply which is also used for domestic purposes. The water from this source is treated with the most modern chorinating machines and analysis of the raw and treated water is made each week.

We are attaching herewith a "General Map Showing Reservoirs and Pipe Lines of the Johnstown Water Company, The Manufacturers Water Company and the Conemaugh & Franklin Water Company." As you will note, the capacity, flooded areas in acres, depth, elevation of spillway, yield during dry years, area of watersheds, land owned and the date built, is indicated on the same for each reservoir.
