HISTORY OF JOHNSTOWN WATER COMPANY

CHARTER AND ORGANIZATION


    The Johnstown Water Company was chartered by special act of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on April 11, 1866, for the purpose of "introducing from some convenient source a sufficient supply of pure and wholesome water to the boroughs of Johnstown, Conemaugh, Millville, Prospect, Cambria and vicinity." These boroughs with a portion of the vicinity were incorporated into the city of Johnstown in 1890.

     Among the early citizens of Johnstown most active in the organization of the Johnstown Water Company were Daniel J. Morrell, Dr. John Lowman, George Fritz, James MeMillen, Cyrus Elder, James Williams, George W. Osborne, Jacob Fend and General Jacob M. Camp bell. Most of these men served as officers or members of the board of directors during the company's early history. The first officers of the Johnstown Water Company were the following:
