History of the Johnstown Water Company


JOHNSTOWN WATER COMPANY TODAY -1963


At the present time the Johnstown and Saltlick water companies serve the city of Johnstown, the boroughs of Westmont, Soutlimont, Ferndale, Dale, Brownstown, Lorain, Franklin and East Conemaugh and portions of the townships of Upper Yoder, Lower Yoder, Stony- creek, Jackson, East Taylor, West Taylor, Middle Taylor and Conemaugh (Cambria and Somerset counties). A total of 23,1429 consumers are served and these consumers in 1962 used a daily average of 11,600,000 gallons. Of these consumers, 52.7 percent are on the gravity system and 47.3 percent are on the pumping system. The distribution and supply systems have 233.037 miles of pipe.

The Johnstown Water Company is under the careful supervision of several agencies and bureaus of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. All rates, rules and regulations must be approved by the Public Utility Commission. Almost every function of the water company is controlled by other state agencies such as the Department of Health, the Department of Forests and Waters, the Water Power and Resources Board, the Sanitary Water Board and the Fish Commission.

The Johnstown-Saltlick combination has 107 employees-- 62 hourly rated and 45 salaried--whose average age is 142 years and whose average length of service is a little over 19 years. Since 1954 the hourly employees have belonged to the State, County and Municipal Workers' Union, an AFofL-CIO affiliate. The company ‘s relations with the union are excellent.
