The Glenwood Moravian Trombone Choir is part of the ministry of Glenwood Moravian Community Church in Madison, WI. The GMTC was founded in 1983 by Barbara Strauss and Mike Allsen. The group rehearses weekly (Thursday nights), all year round at Glenwood Church (731 Gilmore Street, on Madison's near west side), and does about twenty performances each year. Since its founding in 1983, the group has logged over 400 performances: primarily Sunday worship services at Glenwood and other Madison churches, but also community concerts, weddings, funerals, and Glenwood's annual Ice Cream Social. (Click here to see a complete chronicle of GMTC performances.) The all-volunteer group currently consists of about fifteen members, ranging in age and experience from High School players to several of the local pros. Most members of the choir are not members of the Glenwood congregation, but they play a vital role in the musical life at Glenwood. The group is open to ALL players, regardless of age or ability.  If you're interested in joining, or hearing more about the group, please contact Mike Allsen (see below).

Frequently-asked Questions
I've received several queries from brass players and church musicians interested in Moravian brass music since I put up this page a few years ago.  Here are some suggestions.

Instrumentation and Repertoire
The Moravian trombone choir is a tradition that dates to 1731, when the first documented trombone choir performance took place at the Moravian congregation at Herrnhut, Germany, but the tradition of trombones in Protestant worship goes back much further than that.  Trombone choirs quickly became part of Moravian worship at German congregations and at the newly-founded Moravian settlements in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Ohio.  The traditional Moravian trombone choir is a Posaunenchor -- a full trombone consort with soprano, alto, tenor and bass trombones.  (SATB Posaunenchors still exist at several Moravian congregations:  in Pennsylvania, Ohio, California, and North Carolina.)  The GMTC utilizes trumpets as the lead voice, but the rest of the group plays alto, tenor, or bass trombones, thus maintaining the unique sound of a consort of cylindrical-bore brass instruments.  Over the years, the GMTC has collected a unique repertoire:  we play the chorales and hymn tunes that are the backbone of the Moravian trombone choir tradition, but we also have a library of some 500 works, primarily arrangements and original compositions by members of the GMTC.

players (summer 2002) in the group include
sopranos:  Jeff Allsen, Carol Fisher, Caren Young
     altos:  Mike Allsen, Brian Whitty
tenors:  Diann Allsen, Roger Ash, Steve Ash, Joan Hansen, Nancy Kurr, Patty Roth,
          Paul Schick, Milt Strauss
