Breed Description The gracefulness and pure pleasure of riding a Tennessee Walking Horse was the distinct purpose in the creation of such a tremendous breed. The Walking horse is a composite, mainly from the Standardbred, Morgan and Thoroughbred. Today it is a unique entity, that today has come to possess the endurance of the Thoroughbred, the substance and weight of the Standardbred, the smooth lines and docility of the Morgan, as well as the style and quality of the American Saddle Horse. These outstanding traits have been combined and refined to mark the Walking horse as a distinct breed and talented breed, making it one of the smoothest riding horses in the world. Today this wonderful breed has become a pleasure mount that has become a popular mount for trail riding because of its comfortable gait; also a winner in the show ring for its conformation, manners and gait. The disposition to the Walking horse is unique. It is, by nature a loyal and affectionate animal that is highly intelligent, even tempered and of a kindly disposition. Because of the gentle makeup of this breed, it is an ideal companion for both young and old. The Walking horse averages 15 ½ hands. It comes in a variety of colors with long, full mane and tails. They have long graceful necks, short backs, deep in the body and well ribbed, full in the flanks and of good portion and width in the chest. The Walking Horse has three natural gaits: The Flat walk is the slowest of the three, being bold, even and comfortable carriage for the rider. The Running Walk is a faster variation of the Flat Walk & gives the rider a sensation of “gliding”. The Canter is a rise and fall movement (Rocking Chair Canter), is a refined gallop involving tremendous form, portraying the true showmanship of the Tennessee Walking Horse.
