Michael’s Musings We live in an age of relativism and subjectivism. The “spirit of the age” is manifested in a plea to “agree to disagree” and an attitude which disdains the claim that one may indeed know a truth which is objective and to which all men are amenable. Those who plead the case for being “open minded” and denying that one may know a truth to which another would be accountable seek freedom from truth, for it confines their philosophies and theologies. This is indeed ironic, for it is truth which gives freedom. Jesus stated, “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32). One who feels restricted by the truth of God’s word which mandates God’s desires for His people may reject the truth, only to find that the desire to be free from the truth brings about slavery to sin. Some make the plea for “room” in understanding the scriptures to allow for differences of opinions concerning what God has mandated. The idea is propagated that “you have your truth, and I have mine.” Such is a denial of the existence of truth. God is, and His word remains true whether or not we submit to it. Jesus prayed that God would, “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth” (Jn. 17:17). We will be sanctified by God only through obedience to His word. To reject truth is to reject God. There are those among the churches of Christ today who call for us to be more “open minded”, to embrace those of the denominational world who reject God’s truth. Brethren, beware, “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness” (Rom. 1:18). I urge my brethren to “Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth” (Eph. 6:14). When one among us calls for a rejection of the truth in favor of subjectivism and embracing error we must respond “In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth” (2 Tim. 2:25).
