UNFAIRNESS
Copyright 2000 Tom Rittenhouse

Whenever I see unfairness to others and can see a way to correct it, I do.

However when the unfairness is towards me, I am often unable to respond appropriately, but become sullen and uncooperative.

I think what I liked most about my time on the road is that as a (minister) Priest of the Spirit it gave me permission to stick my nose in and correct unfairness when I came across it.

I guess that what I define as fairness is when everyone involved can walk away thinking, I guess we got as much as we could reasonably expect under the circumstancesö. It is not a matter of Right and Wrong. It is not justice. It definitely is not legality. Right and wrong means complying with some Truth or another. Justice is an eye for an eye, an arm for an arm. Legality means complying with some arbitrary decision. All of those imply punishment of some sort. Fairness on the other hand does not require punishment.

Take affirmative action as an example. Justice says take the job away from the white man and give it to the black man. Legality says the same. Right and wrong depend on the Truth you subscribe to, if your truth says whites are superior to blacks, then affirmative action would have been to leave things as they were. Fairness says to quit being unfair to give the blacks the same opportunities that the whites have, but not take rights away from anyone. Fairness always seeks a balance.
