How to reach the
Metroclan sites
Background:
We had the opportunity to move the Metroclan website
server to another location and have gone ahead and made the move. The DNS number is 24.93.84.19.
Win9x
kernel:
- Launch Windows Explorer and navigate to the
Windows subdirectory (e.g., c:\windows).
- Find the file named "Hosts". Note:
- the final Hosts file should have no .*** extension. On the 9x systems, there
may only be a hosts.sam file which is a sample of how to use the Hosts
file. If you have the hosts.sam file, edit it as shown on the next line
and then click Save As... instead of Save.
- Edit the "Hosts"
file with a text editor (Notepad / WordPad / your choice - another way to
do this is to open a DOS prompt and type C:\windows\notepad hosts):
24.93.84.19 (spaces or Tab here) www.metroclan.com
- Note: to reach the Metroclan
forums directly, create another entry below the first, 192.216.92.188 forum.metroclan.com. Save
the file and close it.
- Save the file in your
text editor. You will want to make sure that the file is saved without an
extension. You can do this by typing this into the "save as"
line when you save the file:
"Hosts"
- Make sure you use the
quotes to keep the file from being saved with an extension (like .txt). If
you find the file has an extension, you will need to get rid of the
extension by renaming the file in Explorer to simply "Hosts".
- Launch your browser to go to the Internet and
enter the Metroclan URL (www.metroclan.com) in the browser Address bar.
Your browser will resolve to the new IP number. (If this doesn't work,
make sure that your Hosts file is not hosts.sam - make sure there is no
extension for the file.)
Note:
Here's another trick to force Windows to save Hosts without an extension. Bring
up a DOS prompt:
cd windows (press enter)
rename hosts.txt hosts (press enter)
WinNT
kernel:
- Launch Windows Explorer and browse to the
following subdirectory under your Windows directory: ...\winnt\system32\drivers\etc
hosts.jpg)
- Find the file named "Hosts". Note:
- this file has no .*** extension. There may be a hosts.sam file which is
simple a sample of how to use the Hosts file.
- Edit the "Hosts" file with a
text editor (Notepad / WordPad / your choice):
- 24.93.84.19 (spaces or Tab here)
www.metroclan.com
- (Note: to
reach the Metroclan forums directly, create another entry below the
first, 192.216.92.188 forum.metroclan.com. Save the file and close it.)

·
Launch your browser and enter the Metroclan URL
(www.metroclan.com). Your browser will resolve to the new IP number.
·
Note: if
your browser was open before you edited your Hosts file, you may have to close
and re-open your browser for the settings in the new Hosts file to take effect.
