My Philosophy of Taking Pictures

Most of the pictures I take are at events where flashes can interfere with the mood of the event.  As a result, these photos are taken without a flash and a combination of the speed of the camera and editing the photo with software combines to achieve the desired result.  In addition, I also try to capture what's happening as opposed to setting up the shot.  The result is often ones that expresses the mood of the event as well as the natural expressions of that moment.  An example of this philosophy can be found on my Religious Education Conference links below.  Photo events include:

Young children are a favorite subject since they tend not to worry about what they look like or what others will think and just express themselves.

Previous photographic experience includes several weddings over the last 35 years, shooting several concerts, including many performances of a Country Rock band that I was a member of during the 70s and 80s, working with various friends as models as well as LOTS of candid's.  Starting in 2004, I started taking a large number of pictures around my church with various functions involving everything from young children to the elderly for a church photo web site.

In addition to the work listed above I do a lot of recreational photography which can be found on the following pages:

George Westlund

George WestlundGeorge Westlund was born in Albany, California in April of 1953 to Mary and Archie Westlund who lived in Hayward at the time.  The Westlund family moved to San Luis Obispo county in late 1955 and then to Atascadero on April 1, 1956.  Upon arriving in Atascadero, the family joined the St. William's Catholic parish.  George attending Atascadero Unified School District schools to high school graduation in 1971.  He then attended Cal Poly State University in San Luis Obispo graduating with a B.S. in Architectural Engineering in 1977 and a M.S. in Computer Science in 1986.  He started work as a staff member at Cal Poly in 1977 and continues to work there maintaining the Universities Financial, Human Resources and Student Administration software.

His photography experience started when his parents bought him a camera prior to their 1969 trip to Minnesota.  He shared these pictures and others taken with one of his high school instructors who suggested that  he enter the Yearbook course as a photographer.  After submitting a few pictures at the end of his junior year, he became the head photographer for the yearbook during his senior year.

Upon graduation he obtained a part time job at KSBY-TV in San Luis Obispo that lasted for two summers and several of the months in between.  During this time he learned to develop slides as well as 16mm movie film.  Since then his interest in photography grew as he obtained new equipment and continued to take pictures whenever the opportunity arose.  In 2000 he bought his first digital camera and started taking more pictures around the St. William's parish.  In 2005 he bought a SLR digital camera and started this web site for his photos taken of friends and St. William's parishioners.

In loving memory of my mother, Mary Westlund (August 14th, 1924 - June 24th, 2005) who always said to me "Take a picture of that" and my Fiancé Theresa Robertson (September 12, 1959 - November 12, 2011) who always encouraged me to do better.
