Music

Here is a collection of songs that I have written over the years. They are a mixture of styles: rock, pop, and folk.

The Insiders

I used to play drums for an amateur band called the Insiders. The guitarist was Paul Carson, with Sean Rush on bass. We had an occasional gig at a party or small club. We used to play some of my songs in the band, including No Time To Think, Zodiac Wizard, and Living In 7/8 Time. The Insiders are now called the Atomic Mosquitos, and they perform regularly at clubs in the Washington, DC area. Here are some of their songs.
For my music notation program, I use Noteworthy Composer. Songs with an NWC version can be played with NoteWorthy Player, which you can download for free from NoteWorthy Software. To save the NWC file, click right on the NWC link and save it to your local computer.
You can also get the NWC Browser Plug-in, a free plug-in that adds NWC song support to browsers.

Hand In The Jar

Sneaking away for a while
Leaving the rank and the file
Down to the fishing hole where I'll relax
But when I return the boss gives me the axe

Chorus: I finally got caught with my hand in the jar
I won't get too far this time

Sal is a gal who's on fire
She makes me burn with desire
But someone was watching and it was my wife
Now I'm in the doghouse the rest of my life
(Repeat Chorus)

Bridge: And I don't know what I'm going to do
Guess I've got to see it through
And I don't know what I'm going to do
Don't let it happen to you

No Time To Think

Well, I feel like I'm breaking outside of my head
My brain waves are jammed with residual lead
Low on sleep, I ain't eaten in days
And I haven't been home in a while
I'm always going around in a haze

Chorus: And I've got no time to think
Too busy running all the time

I can't slow it down 'cause I'm too speeded up
There's so much to do and it never lets up
Work all day, then stay out late
Living on vitamin pills
This cycle seems to be my fate

Chorus: And I've got no time to think
Too busy running all the time

I'm sure getting tired of working too hard
I think I'll quit and be a rock-n-roll star
No more deadlines or briefings at eight
Just do whatever I please
And I won't have to worry about being late
Chorus: 'Cause I'm having fun all day
        With no apologies

Pool Of Life

People say that life's a game now
But I've learned to hedge my bets
Because I'm headed for fame now
And this cannot be as good as it gets
Something better's going to turn up soon, and this I know
And when it does, well then I'll know just where to go

People say that I'm okay now
But they don't expect me to be
Much more than I am today now
Well, we'll just have to wait and see
A wind of change is blowing in the air, and I can feel
This premonition is portending something real

Chorus: You've got to let your (hey hey)
Let your (hey hey), let your (hey hey)
You've got to let your feet hang down in the pool of life

Someday when I'm rich and famous
I'll be lounging by my pool
While some round sexy dame is
Bringing me something tall and cool
And then suddenly an old friend from the past appears
And he's astounded 'cause he ain't seen me in years

Zodiac Wizard

Come with us now, succumb to our will
Abandon your pleasures for close order drill
Don't be a scofflaw, you see we mean well
Though sometimes it's hard to tell
Chorus: And victims of the accident
        Are making known their discontent
Lashing out, though their time is fleeting
I said, where is the future? Can it be coming?
And should we face it or just keep on running
He looked to the sky, and I closed my eyes
I had to admire his cunning
Chorus: But now the boy is lost to me
        Absorbed in his tetralogy
        Futile wars, even now receding
Chorus: And his blind astrology
        Will preserve our equanimity
Saving us from a fate unholy

Nightmares

Music: Gavin Stephenson and Gregory Wilcox
Lyrics: Gregory Wilcox

You wake up in the night, screaming with fright
Can't kill the demons so you snap on the light
But you know it's no use 'cause they don't go away
Your nightmare lives in the light of day

Chorus:

Nightmares, coming alive
Chased by ghosts and stabbed with knives
Nightmares, breaking the chains
That hold you prisoner inside your nightmares
Heavy metal monster is after you
But it's all a dream, nothing he can do
He's got you now, and you start to scream
As you realize that the monster is me

Chorus:

Nightmares, they're frightening
You only care for me inside your
Nightmares, they excite you
You live your secret fears inside your nightmares

Hit Man

Everybody thinks it's so easy
To make it big and be on MTV
Just write the next song that will top the charts
And you too can start to play the part

When your song makes it to number one
You'll be out there in the California sun
But don't forget who put you where you are
It's all the fans that helped make you a star

After several years you may have found
That constant touring seems to get you down
But you know it's what you love to do
You've become one of the chosen few

Chorus:
Of the new sensation, the fascination
The supersonic star
You know, I think you really could go far

Living In 7/8 Time

One two three four five six seven eight...

Everyone says that I'm all out of synch
Because I have all these thoughts that I'm not supposed to think
My head is all buzzed, but I don't even drink
The doctor is telling me, go see a shrink

Chorus:
But I like it this way, I think I'm okay
And I'm not losing my mind
I just see things a different way
Living in 7/8 time

I'm quiet at parties when people are yapping
My toes ought to tap, but my fingers are snapping
Before the punch line, I'm already laughing
I always leave just when things start to happen
(repeat chorus)

Bridge:
And I can't get used to the regular way
I can't get used to the regular way
I can't get used to the regular way
The regular way, the regular way

Seven eight, seven eight!

Under the bridge I want to give it a go
When you refuse we get into a row
I start to leave, but you're telling me no
You want to fly off to Acapulco
(repeat chorus)
(repeat bridge)
(repeat chorus)

One two three four five six seven eight...

Wish For These Days

Blue sky and an open road
Get me through this heavy load
Pedal fast and hard and true
Coming back on home to you

Chorus: I'm going to wish for these days
Beautiful hazy lazy days

Sharp turn and banking tight
Wheels reflecting in the light
Steep hill and rising fast
Got to make this moment last

Nothing is getting done
While I'm out here in the sun
Is that how it should be
Who is going to wait for me?

That For Now

by Paul Carson
She's got a plastic face with no sense of taste
And she doesn't make a stunning impression
She's got an aerial view of the world that she knew
And it's giving her manic depression

Chorus: I just can't decide
        I guess I don't know how
        But if it's alright
        I'll take that for now

We go out on the town and it's bringing me down
'Cause she winks to get his attention
Now she's bending the rules and she'd better be cool
"Cause she'll wind up in the house of detention
Well, I do what I can to go out and get suntanned
Or anything that I can imagine
'Cause I'm unaware and I just don't care
And you could say it's just my fashion
