Wilcox to Seven

Howard,
Thanks for your legislative action alert regarding Senate bill 1394. I sent the following letter (with appropriate salutation) to the seven Senators at the top of your list who have e-mail addresses.  I hope it helps.

Dear Senator Thompson,

Please vote "yes" on Senator Simpson's immigration bill (S.1394) as originally written. This bill would put tough new controls on illegal immigration and reduce legal immigration by about 20%.
My group, Zero Population Growth of Greater Boston, is trying to achieve a sustainable level of population in this country and around the world. We believe that current levels are already unsustainable, as evidenced by numerous environmental and social problems.
Although the reductions in Senator Simpson's bill fall far short of the goal of zero population growth, immigration represents over half of current growth. It has been 70 years since Congress debated legislation to reduce immigration. Passage of this bill would be a chance to address this oversight.
Historically, growth was considered good because it created jobs, opportunity, and revenue. This can only be the case when the ratio of consumers to resources is favorable. We must soon face the fact that the earth's capacity is limited. With world population at 5.7 billion and doubling every 40 years, its ability to provide for all will rapidly diminish. Other methods besides growth must be found to achieve social and economic security.
Please let me know your position on this bill.
